Having recently changed the fuel filter, I already removed and replaced the whole intake assembly as per the Hanes manual. I didn't see how to access it from below by removing the starter motor or from the side by taking off the wheel well. I didn't want to do it again so soon to now diagnose the knock sensor.
The knock sensor in my 3RZ-FE motor is right above the the stock fuel filter on the driver's side of the motor. To get to both the whole intake assembly needs to come out as per the Hanes manual.
I discovered that by swinging the power steering pump over to the driver's side some, still connected but held up with some zip ties, I could reach the knock sensor ok but it's all by feel. Getting a hand or wrench on it was not a problem.
It might be possible to change the fuel filter too if the power steering bracket is also removed because that would make even more access room. Moving the power steering pump over and back on again is easy.
I'm planning to add a pre-filter into the fuel line under the truck where that will become the new normal fuel filter location. Other 3 gen 4runner models have it there but not mine. Toyota engineers must have been hung over when they made that decision.
