*sigh* I know...ughhhh such a big decision. $6,500 just doesn't grow on trees for me.

I think you're making a good decision to buy it. 159K is low mileage for a '97. It sounds like it runs excellent and with all the good records, i'm sure they won't care if you want to have it checked out by a 3rd party. Everybody asks a little more than they're willing to take. Put $6K cash down on the table in front of them. that is hard for anybody not to take, especially when it's in front of their face. If they still won't budge, trust your gut.

Alright, we'll see what happens today.
I'm going to ask my mechanic what he thinks of the price. Maybe if he can say it's way too high in front of them they'll be willing to come down.
I'll be sure to have the $6 cash, but I'll have the $500 in my back-pocket in case they call my bluff.
I mean I guess if I put $500-ish worth of work into it, it would be in pristine condition ($200 for brakes, $150 for a seat bottom, $100 detailing, $20 fog lamp cover, $75 antenna).
Ugh. I'm so bad at negotiating, but I'm being out negotiated by a older mid-western lady. Price-haggle fail. =/

FWIW,
Just bought a 97 runner (exact package yours has - dark grey/Tan Leather) for $5K with 208K miles, and needs rear axle seals, valve cover gaskets, and a new battery. Bought 1 week ago tomorrow.....July 23rd.
Probably not the smartest investment, but I liked it. Sometimes ya just have to take the risk whether anyone tells you its a good idea or not. Go for it. No one will fault you for divin in head first.
On negotiating you'd be suprised how somone might change their mind when they see $6K worth of 20's layin in front of them.

Start off low! Offer $5k in $100 bills and see what they say. I still think it's too high, I'd sell my built truck for $6500 but I can't get anybody to bite on it.
