Opinions Wanted: Possible 2019 Upgrade!

Hi Everyone,

I currently drive a 2007 SR5 V8 and have about 150,000 miles. At work I have been offered a car allowance and believe it or not, I would actually financially make out better if I upgraded to a new vehicle rather than keeping my current vehicle. I love my 2007 because of the V8. I use the vehicle to pull a 23' center console boat around and the V8 gives me plenty of pull to get the boat up and out of the ramp and back home.

However, these days I don't trailer very far: about 1/2 a mile to the boat launch and 4 miles to my dealer for maintenance and winterization.

I've considered the new TRD Pro as a replacement vehicle, but the 4 Runners are only being offered with a V6 and a max 5,000 pound tow capacity. My boat, motor and trailer, w/ fuel is about pushing the limits of that capacity at about 4,900 pounds.

What are your opinions if I should keep the old V8 or take the car allowance and upgrade to the 2019? Can't loose the boat.....

Do you think the 2019 TRD will have enough power/torque to pull that boat out of the water?

the '07 4runner with the V8 was listed at 260 hp with 306 lbs of torque..

the 2018 v6 is 270 hp and 278 lbs of torque..not really a huge difference..

HP and TQ is not the only things figured for in tow ratings.




If OP is sure it is 4,900 lbs I don't see the problem. Its under the rating. But I'd be 100% sure thats the weight. Since pulling the boat gotta think about how much weight water is going to add when pulling the trailer out of the water.

I agree. Why not Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser ($$)? And if you want something 4runner size but V8...maybe Lexus GX?
 
Change Thread title

Hard to know what you're asking by your posting. A lot of people tow things out there that might be able to chime in, but not with your initial lead in. A little searching and different title might help. If money isn't critical, the other options posted might be a better choice, but I do love 4runners first.
 
I know people have been speculating for years on the release of the 6th Gen, but it seems more and more likely that it will be a 2020 model. If I was considering an upgrade I would put it on hold until details are released. If you like it, you didn't lock yourself into the older vehicle... and if you don't you will probably score a good deal on a 5th Gen as dealers get ready for the new models.
