"optional" 3rd row seats?

Is it possible to get a GX470 without the 3rd row seats? Lexus' web site lists it as "optional" but when I do the web "build your own" it doesn't seem to let you build one without the 3rd row.

Please advise.

Yes, you can. Although it may take longer to get one. I ordered mine without the 3rd row seat and love it!

It is almost impossible to get one in NJ. Probably 99.9% of the GX470's have the third row from the factory. The dealer said that you could order one, but resale value wouldn't be great on it. That is why my dad is driving a 4Runner instead of the GX470.

It is not only the seats. When you have third row seats, there are no hooks for a cargo cover and you need that in NY! If you leave the seats in, they take away a chunk of the space for cargo. The other problem for him was the way the liftgate opened.

i do have to admit, the 4Runner will never give the same space as the GX can give you . Unless everyone that drives a 4r are about 5'5" or shorter, than this is the right car for you.

But it's fine, I have both, one for the everyday city driving, and one for the weekend or vacation vehicle. The 4R is definitely more handy to drive around town though, gotta admit that one. :

true. that's what i didnt notice about my 4R before i got it. Everytime i open my liftgate, it hits my garage door! :bash: makes me appreciate the side openning door of my GX.

You definitely can't go wrong with a GX or 4Runner. Both vehicles have their pros and cons. Oh, my liftgate has enough battle wounds from hitting my garage door.

Since the GX is taller in the rear, that is my theory as to why the thing opens the way it does (also for ease of use for women). It would definitely ding up the door if it went up.

The 4Runner's hatch may hit the garage door if your not careful but I love the advantages the design brings.

I can carry long objects with the hatch closed by having them stick out the rear OPENING window. Works great when I have to pick up some 8' fluorescent light bubs or a couple 2x4s.

I have an SUV type tent enclosure that expands the rear cargo area and connects with the hatch open. My wife and I freqentlly sleep in the 4Runner when on a short 1 - 2 night backcountry/forest camping trip. Sometimes I just power down the rear window and use a mesh screen that I have attached via velcro. A 6' x 8' tarp attached tpo the roof rack makes a nice covered area for a couple of chairs and small table.

We also pull a small (A-frame) camper and I can't imagine opening the GX's rear door while connected. Anyone tow with their GX?

CV, i eventually thought the same way as you, after experiecing it with the 4R. it would be worse, because the 4R's door already hits the garage door, and it's shorter (at least a couple inches) than my GX! :bugeye:
