Options for knowing the outside air temp?

Hi all,

Picking up my 4runner soon and am wondering about an add-on option. My current vehicle has a display that tells me (among other things) the outside air temp. Is there a way to get that kind of info in my 4runner? It doesnt appear that a Scangauge will tell me ambient temp, but maybe I'm wrong. Are there other options? Thanks!

I'm sure there are a number of outdoor temp readers as well as other information that you could find online at various places. I would try Cabelas, or Bass Pro Shops and see what type of in-vehicle items they have.

Field Monitor Units will tell you the outside temp but i wouldn't imply it if you're not ready to run more than just two wires. Also it only displays temp reading in Celcius not Farenheit.

my stock '99 temp control unit has outside air temp but same as you it's in Celsius god dammit, the most worthless measurement of temperature ever!
give me metric for everything else except heat.

off topic:

i kinda disagree with that. freeze at 32 and boil at 212? seems like random numbers were picked. 0 and 100 makes way more sense to me

Here is the link to a thread where a guy put a Subaru field monitor in the space below his stereo. Temperature is even in Fahrenheit. I might look into this if I can find the cash.

yeah that all fine and well for the extremes but for daily human life we feel a difference in air temperature even when it's only 1-2 degrees (F), a sliding scale that often forgoes the use of decimals isn't a efficient indicator of air temp. meaning that you will feel the difference in 18-19 degrees F but in Celsius that is still only 4C or whatever the conversion is. so really looking at your indicator you can't really watch temps drop as you gain elevation in real time unless like i said you start using decimals and how annoying is that, with *F it's 1 for 1 whole numbers as opposed to 6.8 .....i honestly find it cumbersome in general and annoying trying to do the conversion.

and i'd also like to mention that yeah those numbers are kind of arbitrary really we should have 0 be freezing and 180 be boiling just offset the numbers and keep it a whole number incremental system. thaqt is the only flaw i can find in the *F degree system for daily life (it becomes a bit murkier when you start talking about theoretical extremes and such)
 
autozone and those have the ambient air temp things for like 10 bucks....has a little sensor you put under your bumper or whatever, then run the wires up into the cab....battery operated. gave my brother one for his bday....now how accurate it is...couldnt tell ya.

I actually got it for him at Bi-Mart

Exactly my thoughts even as someone that travels a lot and is forced to use Celsius. Except I like that freezing point is at 32*. I like that it's more of a scale from 0 being extremely cold (relative to warm blooded animals such as humans) and 100 is extremely hot (relative to warm blooded animals such as humans.) It's more of a base ten model of 1-100 based on the relative comfort of humans. That's just my $.02
 
yeah i'm 1/2 British red passport and everything, lived there for a number of years and when i say flaw in the *F system I'm just talking about whatever the *F haters always complain about. personally i'm with you across the board, it should be relative to the human experience.

I searched for the gauge pack for a while on eBay but they were always around $150 or I lost the auction (typically I maxed my price out at $75 since none of them were guaranteed to work).

I finally ended up going with an auto dimming mirror with temp and compass. I really like the end result. I got it off eBay for $139. They still have one left. Obviously you can ignore the 'fits domestic vehicles part."
