So I have been able to soucre from Australia, 4.56 gears for the T4R front and rear diffs. Note that not one dealer of gears in the US I have spoken to (11 in total) showed any interest in supplying gears for the 4th gen in the near future. You cannot get these gears in the US as they are simply not available for the front diff. A few dealers expressed their thought that in the next two years this may become available in the US, but not now. (Oz and Japan have these gears for the Prado 120 platform)
These gears will suit owners of 4th gens here in the US with larger tires than stock (+32") who are concerned with loss in pickup and mpg. Calculations of gearing ratios have been discussed in the previous thread in this forum See here , and we are taking into account that people likely to buy the gears are also dealing with weight issues related to bullbars, rear bumpers, winches, camping gear that is dragging the truck down somewhat.
At this stage, I think we will probably try to get one set of gears and a test truck to see how it all works. If this all comes out well, then we can post full details of the outcome.
At this stage I am not interested in helping others to procure these gears, but rather I am seeking some feedback as to the possible interest in purchasing these gears sometime in the next six months or more.
Having experienced what it has taken (time wise) to develop and have built a bullbar for the 4th gen. I imagine it will take every bit of six months for the first truck here to have the 4.56s installed.
If you have a strong sense that you would like to be included in a purchasing deal in the next 6-12 months for these gears, could you post here your interest.
You will not be held accountable for expressing interest. I am more curious than anything else at this stage as to whether there are others who may want this mod.
Besides the ring and pinion, you will also need an install kit which should run a few hundred $ but we can access these locally (in the US)
You would be well advised to consider installing lockers while doing the gears too. Absolutely not necessary, but convenient to be done at the same time.
