or replace the original drive with a sold state drive. installed original hard drive as supplementary storage in the optical drive slot. installed optical in a plastic housing so it is a fully functional external plug in. did this with my late 2009 entry level macbook. do it yourself procedure with how to videos and great phone support. https://www.macsales.com. sped me up substantially, enough so that I need not buy a new mac.
And I have 8 gigs of RAM, 2 slots of 4 gigs each. It's spec'd for a max of 4 gigs, but will actually support 8.
