while yes that will speed it up i'm the last one at work to ever get a new device. i'm holding out for a new mbpro!

disk utility > select disk from left side > upper left corner Verify (verify disk permission) > Repair Disk permission (it will tell you if needed). Run this regularly, every week or two.

lower right corner Verify Disk > Repair Disk (it will tell you if needed). Run once a month or so.
 
Anybody know if its possible to swap out the HD on the iMac? I have my MBP, and my iMac, but I want to upgrad the HD on the iMac, and add an external to the wireless network so all my devices will have access to it?

ifixit.com they have all the extremely detailed walkthroughs on upgrades and teardowns.

The program I mentioned earlier. Cocktail, does that as well as some other maintenance things like clearing certain caches and log files.

2nd ifixit. Their walkthroughs are ridiculously meticulous and easy to follow.

Yeah, you might be running into a lack of RAM issue. 4gb just isn't much these days. I've got 16gb of RAM and just running my computer with no programs uses around 4 gb. When you're using your computer, go into your applications folder and then into the utilities folder. Open a program called activity monitor. That will show you how much (and where) your RAM is being used.
 
Yea my MBP is running stupid slow. Doing anything causes the spinning beach ball for at least 30 seconds. Can I upgrade the ram?
 
I'm also running into an issue with the new update of Yosemite that won't let me connect to my apple tv. I get sound but no picture. I've tried restarting the router and my computer and everything is up to date.

Unfortunately you can't. It's hardwired in. One big negative on them. Which is why when I bought mine, I maxed it out

Those are for pre-retina versions of the MacBooks. It was super easy to add more ram. Slightly more work to add HD space, but also easy. They claimed that by reducing the overall size of the machine made it logistically hard to have access to the RAM.

Download an app called Memory Clean and run it frequently. As well as Cocktail (once a month). Turn your computer off at night, don't leave it in sleep mode. How much HD space do you have? When you start maxing out your HD space, you'll also start to hurt performance.
 
I will try what you suggested but I intentionally got a pre-retina MBP due to the retinas not having a disc drive. So I can upgrade my RAM?
