Out with Daystar, in with Toytec

Buying Daystar spacer lift and getting that carp installed was a major brain fart on my part - 8 months of bouncy ride and rear wobble, not to mention front tires cupping. :happens:
So, to everyone that thinks of a spacer lift, take my advice and don't do it...unless you want a Cadillac.

I find it interesting you say don't do the spacer lift. I've heard nothing but good things about the DayStar lift on here, that's why I bought it. Most people I've seen that take it off for another lift, do so for more lift. Why were your tires cupping? Did you get it aligned?

Just like you, I bought into it after reading all the good stuff on the forums. To be honest I hated the way my truck drove after I got it installed. Ride quality was shabby and soft, the rear was all over the place and when I took speed bumps a bit faster there was sometimes a thump coming from the rear. Mechanically, there was nothing wrong with the suspension - I had it checked a number of times - and XREAS was not leaking. The alignment was done to specs as well. I guess I had enough of the spacers when I started to hear my front tires at highway speeds, and found out that I got cupping on them due to bouncy suspension out:

Truck looks great, glad you're happy with the Toytec but I've never heard of anyone with the problems you describe from the Daystar. Like many others, I will replace mine, possibly with a Toytec system, but 3 years and counting on the spacers and she handles like a champ. Cheers!

Huh... I'd be pretty amazed if my 4Runner rode like my Cadillac..

Looks good now, too much stink bug for me though.

I have xreas with the daystar and havent had any issue that you've had. The clunk in the rear fast over a speed bump is probably your exhaust hitting the axle when you blast a speed bump. Nothing to do with Daystar kit. Sorry to hear you had so many issues but you're the first person.

In my opinion, the ride got softer after the spacer lift. I really wasn't impress with it. The original plan was to ride the spacer lift for few more years till my xreas craps out, but once I found out that my tires a cupping due to suspension bounce I got the lift and ucas.

Wanted to get Overland Warehouse kit....but it was few months after they closed....next best thing - Toytec. And very happy with it

I have had my Daystar (the old 2 piece front style) on for 5 years now and I am completely happy with it. It drives just like it did stock. My tires wear very evenly. I have been off road in the desert a lot with it. I have driven several vehicles with coilovers but no Toytechs that I know of, and they rode very harsh at low speeds in rocks. I much prefer the ride of my stock springs and shocks. I guess that if you want to go very fast in the desert Toytechs may be better but my off road group is not into that.

Why were your tires cupping? Did you get it aligned?

Suspension bounce... As per my friend mechanic plus National 4x4 shop...
I was also told by the shop that it might smooth out after a while...Almost two months with toytec, the cupping is almost gone...but i'm still probably gonna get the tires replaced.

I had my parents do the lift while I was away on a 3 month vacation, so I've only been enjoying the lift for only few days.

I wish I could say the same about Daystar and I prefer a stiffer ride from Toytec. The truck handles much better than stock with xreas (in my opinion)

The Daystar lift is fine for street and moderate off road use. My tires aren't cupping, I have no rear-end wobble, the ride is near stock and the XREAS is preserved. People trash XREAS but if you're into any sort of handling capability, it is a good system.

The clunk your referring to is more than likely the rear stock shock. Adding a spacer to your rear coils gives you a lift but does nothing for helping with suspension travel. When you go over a speed bump quickly you max out the amount of travel your shock has, therefor creating the clunk noise.

To the original poster, truck looks great throw on some 33's do some chopping and make it mean!
