outboarding rear shocks

Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about it? Or why not to do it? For those who don't know what I'm talking about here are a couple pics of others rigs.

Someone sells a mount that you can weld on the outside of the frame. There are a few guys who have done it, their names just aren't registering now. I know, lots of help. I'll see what I can find.

I like what ripcord did but I'm thinking something a little more like the white one. Can't seem to find what towers he has. I like how they are more or less frenched into the frame. When I do the ford tank swap I plan on 4 linking the rear and either going to struts like the white one or coilovers so I need a nice sturdy setup to go off of in the future.

Trail Gear also makes a universal shock hoop, 13" length as I recall.

Can be had for around 50 bucks

The white T4R has what look to be F250 shock towers on it, a very popular mod in rock crawling on lots of different vehicles. Some people weld the two holes in the center and then up each side of the mount for a very solid setup. Others will put a couple bolts through the center holes and then weld up the sides, to have some assurance incase of the welds failing. I have a set that i bought a couple years ago that are in the garage. Used to be very cheap from the Stealership. This part# should work, when i bought mine they were $11 a piece. Both sides are the same part#

Looks like they are still an awesome deal.

You are my new hero sir. Been trying to come up with a way to run outboards without spending a ton of time fabbing something up

I did mine for the sole purpose of gaining more travel, or better yet maxamize my spring travel. The fact that it stiffens up the rear is a bonus because the more verticle a shock it the more effective it is at dampening

It doesn't look like much but all the FJ's i was runing around with lifted a tire here

The further the shock is mounted out towards the wheels the better damping effect the shocks have as well.

Not sure why I didn't think about this before ran them in the front of my old first Gen. Found the build on the first runner and looks like he made his own mounts. Here is a link for anyone interested. Superior Off-Road's 4Runner Build - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum

I too would like to do this some day, if for no other reason than to get rid of stud mount shocks. But my question is if anyone has done this with stock BS wheels?

I have 265 75 16s on stock steelies that work great and would like to keep that setup, it seems as though the rear tire would get awfully close under articulation.

To those that have done this, could you post your wheel and tire setup as well? I have posted in a few people's build threads but didn't get any solid answers.

This is my concern as well. I have 255/85/16 on stock steelies.

I like those ford mounts.. This thread just lit a fire under my bum to finally redo my first attempt.

I just want to be able to get more travel out of the rear end than the stock configuration cal allow. Gonna do a ton of measuring when I get home and go shock shopping.

idk about that when the ford ones are way cheaper.

I think towers like that are what I want now, I was originally looking at shock hoops not towers.

Nice setup! What are your tire/wheel specs?

i would think 255s wouldnt have an issue due to their width, but hey, i have no idea. ive been considering this modification as well for quite some time. i am not satisfied w the dampening of my bilstein 5100 series in the rear, even w the new OME coils in the rear

The ones I posted are designed to be frenched into the frame so the tire has less chance of contacting the shock and have a wider width for coilovers. Not sure if the ford towers would be up to the task. I have seen the tower litteraly rip in half could of been from bad welds or faulty material.
