Outbound Overland - Trips and track info

Hey everyone,

We've been working on a project for the last several months and have finally gained enough critical mass to share it with everyone here.

<b>Tl;Dr:</b>

• We’re mapping offroad trails on public lands and freely publishing the GPS tracks for everyone’s benefit
• We’re coordinating group trips to foster the offroading/overlanding community in our area
• We’re doing this this free of charge
• The first official track published was the Allegheny and Shenandoah Overland Trail

<b>Slightly longer:</b>

• [MENTION=137555]Sleeter[/MENTION] and I first started coordinating on the “Spring Overland Trip” earlier this year and traded some GPS tracks and maps during the [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] annual Cove trip last fall
• We’ve been working together behind the scenes on new group trips (short, medium, and long distance), community outreach, and filling a much needed gap by mapping accessible trails on public lands in the greater mid-atlantic region
• We’ll be updating the website with additional pics/video, trip info, and most importantly maps in the near future, but in the interim, we wanted to give everyone in the community here some background on what Outbound Overland is all about

<b>What is Outbound Overland?</b>
<i>Outbound Overland is a group of friends dedicated to the pursuit of adventure.</i>

<b>What is Outbound Overland’s charter?</b>
<i>Outbound Overland’s charter is to combine our love of outdoor exploration, 4wheeling, self-sustained overland travel, camping, and community as we pursue the goal of discovering and mapping public overland routes and making them available free of charge to the overlanding community worldwide.</i>

<b>Why do this?</b>
<i>The lack of consolidated, accurate information on dirt road/off-road tracks through public lands has historically been a limiting factor for overlanders and outdoor enthusiasts located around the mid-atlantic region of the US.</i>

<b>Who is Outbound Overland?</b>
<i>Friends with a common interest in vehicle based travel and adventure.</i>

<b>Where is home base for Outbound Overland and where do events take place?</b>
<i>Outbound Overland is based out of the greater Washington D.C. region, but our exploration radius currently ranges North to Pennsylvania, West to Tennessee, South to North Carolina, and will continue to expand in the future.</i>

<b>When are Outbound Overland trips and other events?</b>
<i>Over the course of a year we run several types of trips and events</i>

<b>Trips:</b>

<i>Our trips are generally scheduled as either large, medium, or small:</i>

• Large events typically occur once a year, last for 10 or more nights, and cover over 3000+ miles round trip
• Medium events typically occur four times a year (quarterly), last for 4-5 nights and, cover ~350-1000 miles
• Small events typically occur once a month, last for 1-2 nights, and cover ~100-500 miles

<b>How can I get involved with Outbound Overland?</b>

Awesome and good to hear from you! If the beach is too far for the trip later this month we'll be doing another trip in late summer/early fall. Hopefully you can get in on that one.

my family loves camping but they aren't so much into the trail driving stuff. tomorrow i'm taking off for Isle Royale so that expends my adventure budget for the month. I do have my eyes open for upcoming events though.

Count me as a NW Ohio lurker. This is a timely project for you with appropriate distance for me as I am still waiting for my '17 TRDP and all of the accessories/mods to arrive and put together (Mid August?). I am learning a lot about the overland experience and will be down in WV for Bridge Day (Rappelling) in October. The rig should be finished... with the first round of mods anyway... and I plan to find some off-road trails near the AT for a couple day section hike as well. Maybe as this thread builds I will see something I can tag along with you all and at the very least learn more and more as it grows. If you draw a crowd from my region maybe my learning curve will spike sooner. Thanks for sharing and opening this to the masses!

There is an annual T4R camping trip that's usually late October. Not so much an overlanding trip as it is camping, shooting, drinking, and a few trails... Location is Gore, VA. Watch the 5th gen section for the details. Antman usually posts something up in August. It's a great opportunity to meet some members, bs about the T4R, and check out some sweet builds.... and the Cove Campground is in a beautiful (quiet) setting.

Awesome, I will keep an eye out for it. I have been looking for an excuse to get up to Harpers Ferry to visit AT HQ, and the Harpers Ferry Crossed Pistols are the symbol of the Military Police so there are many reasons to get up that way.

Hopefully it is the week/end before the 21st and that will probably be a lock.
