Quick question...trying to decide on what 4Runner I want to buy. One comes with Homelink/Auto Dim, other doesn't. But doing a search I can get the Homelink cheap and install and the mirror can be bought at Brandsport. Now...my question...does the 4Runner have and outside temp gauge? Deciding whether or not I need to order the rearview with that in it also. Thanks.

It's the difference between buying here in CA or NV.

Yes!! All 4th Generation 4Runners have Outside Temperature Gauge.

Are you the one placing an order on a Sport V8?

If you are indeed that member....if you still haven't ordered it yet. Order it WITHOUT the moonroof.

Because 4th Generation 4Runners have the Moonroof problem which rattles & eventually doesn't close.

My friend's 4Runner's moonroof finally gave out & took him 4 hours to close it.

Uneek's moonroof already has the rattle after just 2 years.

go test drive one.

as for the homelink in mirror, you're going to need a power supply from the map lights.

One has gray w/out the Homelink and Auto-dim mirror and is in CA

Other is tan(they have 2) w/ Homelink and Auto dim. Thing is they want $700 more AND I have to go to the DMV to do my own registration and get it smogged since I'd be purchasing it outside of CA. Not sure I really want to deal with it.

Otherwise...trucks are EXACTLY the same. So I can add homelink for $60 (per a search) and 10min of time and buy a autodim mirror for $150 with compass.


And yes...I've looked and test drove...but their are ALWAYS things you forget to look for! :-) Thanks all!

I know J.A. purposely ordered his truck w/o the Moonroof, because he didn't want to face the future problem & he wanted extra head room.

And lawwailok has a moonroof on his Limited. I informed him & he stopped using his moonroof.
 
No worries icantsee...wasn't getting on ya. I appreciate the heads up. But I wonder how many 4Runners REALLY have this problem. I see THOUSANDS of them on the road up here in NorCal, so I'm wondering how many of them have this issue. But...I guess that's what the warranty is for! :-)

I just love having the sun beat in on me on those nice sunny days or cruising up to Tahoe! VW's don't have the best sunroofs either as they rattle, but I've dealt with those for 12 years.
 
Don't be afraid of the sunroof.

Hell, when we bought the Runner we wanted the sunroof, so we sure as hell are gonna use it.

The problem with them getting stuck is not because of a defect, but because of the grease they used from the factory. It eventually losses its ability to lubricate properly (especially worse with cold weather areas), and after awhile it becomes seized. To remedy this you must remove the old grease and pick up a tube of Lithium grease, and reapply it all over again.

Re grease it ever year, whether of not you use it.

I use it often and I'm not daunted by it getting stuck.

BTW, why would one stop using it because they are afraid it "might" get stuck (Think probability). (Not personal or directed towards anyone in anyway)
 
I agree with gizmopt2002, don't be afraid of the moonroof. I haven't had problems with the moonroof in either of my 4Runners (2006 or 2008) and I use very often.
 
Good to know gizmopt2002....thanks for the heads up. Got plenty of that grease around so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll add it to my list of "to do's" when I get my 4Runner. <still negotiating!>

Key in the zip code of both dealers in CA and NV. If they're handled by two different regional distribtutors, then there will be different option combinations on the lot. Most of the 4Runners in NorCal are pretty basic and don't have too many options on them.

The rattle is here and there. It first rattled this April 2008 when I was coming back from Tahoe (and it was hotter than usual), I took delivery Feb '06, and hasn't since. Don't let the moonroof stop or scare you. I special ordered mine and I was fully aware of the possible moonroof issue. I could've left it out, but it's just cool to have another window.

The way I see it is, I could have one without a moonroof and have other issues (sulfur smell, seat squeak, etc.) or have one with a moonroof and that be the only issue. With over 30,000 parts to assemble a vehicle, it's always going to be a gamble.

Are you a skiier or snowboarder?
 
If you want the moon roof get it !! yes it can have a problem , just like anything else on the truck. Most all 4R's have it and I'm sure the percentage with problems vs the % sold are very minimum.

Here is impossible to find one without.

Its like saying if you have the sulfer smell get one without an exhaust.

If you window fails on a few , order it without windows.

Yes , mine may fail at sometime , hopefully not , but ANYTHING can fail . I keep then seals clean and soft and keep the channels clean and greased . NOT to say this will prevent it from breaking , but I do my best .
 
Thanks all for the replies. I'm currently deciding on whether I want to settle for the gray over the tan being the gray is in CA and I wouldn't have to deal with smogging it and going to the DMV if I bought in NV. Just don't want to deal with it. I can see that I can just add Homelink myself for $60 and a compass mirror for $150 (Brandsport or something like that). So I may just settle on gray and buy in CA.

And...I snowboard. But haven't been up in almost two seasons as I fractured my shoulder last time I went up. I may switch back to skiing as that's how I started up in WA. I find it MUCH MUCH easier than boarding, but that could be cuz I play hockey too.
 
I just read about the Sunroof Problem and sold my 4Runner immediately. I didn't want to deal with it if it ever occurred...:awais:

I kid, I kid. good to know the problem exists, so we can take precautions. I'd rather deal with a sunroof problem rather than an engine or a transmission problem...:beer:
 
Every car I have ever owned with a sunroof has ALWAYS had a problem at some point. I just think they are mechanically prone to failure. We can put a man on the moon, but we can't make a reliable sunroof. ;):

Good to know about the lithium grease. I might have to go buy some. Any suggestions how and where to apply the grease?

Also, in regards to the headroom: yes, the roof line drops a bit with sunroof vs. a 4R without it, but I'm 6'1" and have plenty of head room in my 4R with the sunroof in it.

Exactly... I knew any moonroof or sunroof for that matter will have issues. I'll take my chances and enjoy the feature I have. My uncle's 1992 Camry doesn't have any problems with the moonroof. He's not exactly the type that's 100% spot on maintenance too.

There's only so much you can do, if it's not this problem it could be another. But if you want the option, get it rather than look back and wish you had it and then possibly try and go the aftermarket route.

I'm 6'2" , no head room problems ay all.

I've had a
99 Explorer
01 F150 Supercrew
03 F150 Supercrew
04 Z71 Tahoe
06 4Runner

All with power sunroof, never had an issue , but others have had occasional issues on other boards just like this one. Hope my Toyota one will hold up just as well. If I bought another one I would still get a sunroof as long as its factory installed. All vehicles have had quite a bit off off road travel and jarring.

Are there any sunroof TSB's that have helped anyone with problems. Its nice to have extended warranty's with all these gadgets you can have problems with.

Fantastic, I'll be at Northstar again this season. Lookout Mountain has expanded. I wonder if they'll make it more accessible by getting rid of the T-bar and introduce more people there or leave it alone, so most can't get up there.

I'll probably try skiing as well, I'm not a park rider, so I need to change it up a bit since I'm getting a little bored of boarding.
