Outer Banks, NC - End of March

I posted this in the Off Road section as well, but I think it may get some more exposure here.

I will be headed down to the Outer Banks from March 22nd-March 29th. I will be staying in Southern Shores and want to do a little beach driving while I'm there. Since I'm completely new to this, I would love to hook up with a couple people a little more familiar with this area and this kind of wheeling and have a nice day on the beach. Hey man, enjoy your trip. I'm in Greensboro but I couldn't make it up. Being only 16 its hard to get away. I have never done any off-roading. I have been to the Outerbanks and it is a really nice place you should have a lot of fun. Just out of curiosity where are you coming from?

driving on the beach is fine, doing donuts in view of the cops isn't.


trd_4runnin - you will be fine exploring by yourself. drop your tire pressure to 15 psi and you will have no worries. there is a sand dune that you can drive onto just north of corolla (probably illegal, but pleading ignorance would work as the signage is very poor) plus lots of trails where you can look for wild horses.

all the beaches are great for exploring, the ones in ocracoke are especially nice if you want to be out on your own.

for the most part, there are always people around and more than a few that are willing to help in the extremely unlikely scenario that something go wrong.

just make sure that you don't do any beach donuts in front of the cops!

Koz, I actually did a search for "outer banks" and saw that picture already. I'd like to add that it looks as though those donuts were executed perfectly.

Thanks for all of the tips. I was looking at some pictures I found when I googled this subject and I saw some guys album of offroading in corolla. He appeared to start out on the beach but ended up in like tall grass and mud. Is that just what you get into the farther north you go.

Also, I'm definately looking forward to the wild horses. My fiance won't stop talking bout possibly seeing them!

Just to set the record straight, I did the donuts on the most secluded section of the beach (miles from any other vehicles). The Ranger must have been hiding under a rock somewhere. He probably was lying on some dune with binoculars. He was also a dichead; threatening to put me in jail for doing a donut on a secluded beach. I was nothing but respectful until he threatened me, I couldn

So, it's official I rented a home for a week for the week of April 19, in Avon, NC in the Outer Banks (I hope Avon is a nice town) The question I have is I will be running my stock Dunflops on the Beach, will they be sufficient enough? The 5-Bedroom house was only $920 for the week!!

I stayed on Ocracoke in Sept 05. Dunlops are fine, if its really soft, let a little air out.

Consider bringing your own air compressor. I don't know about the Avon area, but there are only two public air compressors on Ocracoke...and one was broken when we were there. And the functioning unit was coin operated...

I have to tell you, I've seen som many 4Runners at the OBX this week, Even going to Applebees, I parked in between 2, the one on the left of, black one was really nice with dual exhaust.

well how was the trip?? we're looking to find a place down there next year....avon, corolla, hatteras...not sure which area is most private...any advice?

Avon is where you want to be, it's right in the middle and there is a supermarket and other stores near by and still Very Private also.

The trip was very relaxing and I will be doing it again next year for sure! The only scary thing was the Tornado warning, and being that the houses are built on stilts and slightly move with the wind, it can get a little nerve wrecking! Bring you fishing equipment for deep sea if you have, some people caught Tuna right from the beach, how awesome!

I also had no problem with the stock tires, had fun, you'll even have more fum if you leave the kids and wife at the house for about 2 hours and go to the beach by yourself and open it up a little

Also, when driving through the sand, leave the windows closed!! The fine sand will get sucked big time!

If you want privacy, you want Carova. Its a small community within the sand dunes north of Corolla. It may be a bit spendy, but the only rentals back there are HUGE houses!!

And I totally agree with keeping the windows up to keep the sand out. But it is hard not to roll them down to hear the surf and the birds and to get that sweet ocean smell!!
