Outside Air Temperature

I have a stock SR5 base. My wife's minivan and the car I had before the 4runner had an outside air temperature gauge. My 4runner does not. I am aware that Limited's came with auto heat and air and the console had the outside air temp reading. I am wondering if the wiring to support the automatic controls would be on my SR5 and if it is possible to simply switch it out with my manual controls.

Your 4runner does read this information. Instead of the switch you have planned, why don't you just buy a scangauge II. That was you can read the intake air temp as well as several other things. Look them up, one of the best investments I've made. It's a little over $150 and has a wealth of information and capabilities.

Thanks for the information. I am looking for the ambient air temp, though, nothing associated with the performance of the vehicle. Does the scanguage II do this?

The scangauge reads the temperature from the MAF sensor, not ambient air. On the highway it is the same for me, but in the city or idling its different.

That's an aftermarket mirror, nice though. And to the OP, unfortunately you can't just swap out the front panels. Auto climate control models had electroc servos that change the vent outputs, recirc/fresh air setting, etc, while the knob style climate control used cables to move these parts

No it came on the car when my family got it new back in 99, the orginal sticker says it was distributor installed so maybe you could pick one up from toyota

I too, wanted an ambient air temp gauge in my runner. I decided that I didnt need the factory clock as my radio already had one. So..... I found a digital air temp gauge and custom mounted it in place of the clock. I will try and take some pictures in the next few days...

As promised. It looks really bright in this picture but its not too bad. It's red to match the rest of my dash illumination which I've also switched to red. Gauge and probe were about $40 if memory serves me right...

I just got a 98 Limited and have the same mirror.

Which one did you use? Are they all round shaped or that is just a picture? Can you please take a close shot of your gauge? Any comments on installation? Where did you mount the sender unit?
