Overfilled oil, Changed Oil, Now no start????

Team –

I hope you can help me figure this out. I know you are probably busy so I will make this short:

1. Unaware of Overfilled with oil (about 2 quarts)
2. Drove approximately 25 miles (oil light on)
3. Parked it for the night.
4. Cranked next morning to massive blue/white smoke.
5. Pulled into garage and drained all oil (very nasty and gritty, I am ashamed.).
6. Refilled to correct amount.
7. Cranked and blue smoke gone. Happiness overwhelming.
8. While at idle truck dies.
9. Attempt to start and nothing, just the engine turning over.
10. Getting fire
11. Got gas
12. Smell gas
13. Finally got it to start but running extremely rough.
14. Loud knocking noise, like no oil.
15. Engine dies.
16. Attempt to start and nothing, just the engine turning over.

Any ideas? I am at a loss. I have done dozens of oil changes on this truck and never had a problem.

Blue smoke is oil in the cylinders. That plus the overfill plus the oil light on probably means you ran the pressure high. Run a compression or leakdown test, but I don't think you're gonna like the answer.

this sounds dumb, but if you got oil in the cylinders. Check the plugs, they might be fouled. Thats like your best case scenario. Worst case you blew the rings on the pistons/cracked the block and you arent getting compression.
 
If there was oil in the cylinders, there is a good chance of a bent rod...


If you're lucky, you might be able to just pull the plugs, crank it over to blow out any remaining oil, and install new or at least cleaned plugs. If they're coated with oil, they're not going to do much for igniting...
 
I appreciate the feedback, I will check the plugs. The only question that doesn't make great sense is that it ran fine (other than smoke) while overfilled. It wasn't until I drained it that I started having issues.

I will keep you posted as to what I find when I pull the plugs.

6.5 instead of 5.5

I put 6.5 qts in my 4runner - I used to have a 2001 Sequoia which took 6.5 and I was confused. What is the risk?

A little over(1/3 quart in my experience): No effect
More over: Oil foams in sump due to churning action of crankshaft; foam doesn't pump or lubricate very well. Drain back to normal.
Way over: Oil slurges into cylinders enough to hydraulic the engine. Buy new engine.
 
How'd you manage to pull this old thread up?
Either way it would be interesting to find out what happened.
 
I overfilled my 2005 4runner by 1 to 2 quarts and nothing bad has happened. I will drain a quart off perhaps.

I think this warning is paranoid BS.
 
Overfilling any ICE with motor oil causes the crank to introduce too much air into oil, bubbles form that don't allow for quite as thorough lubrication.

Bad things happening, I don't know, but there IS a reason for the bottom fill line on a dipstick AND the top fill line too, otherwise we'd fill it like a radiator, no?
 
This brings back memories. I filled the engine with an extra 5.5 qts, (don't ask) and didn't know why I was smoking. Took it to a shop a mile or so away and they figured it out very fast. No blown heads or anything!
 
My brand new Taco 2021 came with a quart of oil over the limit! Had to drain. A heater hose clamp (constant torque) was not engaged!: Glad I saw it during my inspection. Oil filler neck started leaking at the O-ring (miles 45, JUST forty five). Upon inspection found a small plastic piece on the O-ring! This brand new Taco is not even close to my 97 4runner in quality or craftsmanship. Toyota made a BIG mistake by taking their factory to Mexico!

Like Pluton said, if your crankshaft turns the oil to foam, it can’t be pumped sufficiently.

It's funny how nearly every last manufacturer of any sorts that moves production to Mexico has an immediate dip in quality that costs them countless customers and reputation, yet everyone still thinks it's an A1 idea. Toyota, BMW, VW, Optima batteries, etc. Hell look at Colt products if you want an example outside cars. Ffs it seems like 5th gen 4runners go through a new recall every year
But when you're too big to fail you can make dumb*ss decisions like this and still come out on top every which way. That's something I think a lot of tbh. A very common trait these days where people don't recognize the incentive to make a quality product because people will buy it just the same if they don't.

It’s too tempting for them to go to Mexico and only pay 5 dollars an hour instead of Union wages and the experience.

so captnsolo, you brung up a 6 year old thread to say you think its BS? can you tell us WHY you think its BS to not overfill an engine with oil?
