Overhead console install?

My sunglass holder started skipping gear teeth a couple weeks ago. Pulled the overhead console, duct taped the black gear back into place and all is good EXCEPT I can't figure out how to put the overhead console back into place with the metal clips with a tight fit.
I've searched all the map light mods, youtube videos, etc. to find out the best way to bang that thing into place but haven't found any instructions.

If someone could help me with directions on clip placement or any tip how to get the overhead console back into place that would be fantastic!

Thank you in advance.

Wish I could help, but the best I can do is bump it back to the top for more exposure. I’m also subbing since mine hangs down a bit in the front near the windshield (I bought it that way), and I haven’t had a chance to pull it apart to fix the clips yet. I didn’t want to make it worse either, so I figured I’d wait to see a write up on it or a thread like this, since I never think about it when I’m reading on here.

To put it in, if it's not jacked, put the back edge in first and push it up.

I'll see if I still have the one from my 04. It has sunroof switch, but no garage or mic or lenses. If I have it still you can have it for shipping cost if you want it.

iBison thanks for the info! I don't need a new console. Luckily both metal clips at the front didn't get jacked up or lost!
My big question is, how do i orient the metal clips on the console tabs, or do i fit the metal clips in the sheet metal and push the console tabs up into them. Right now it's back in position but it hangs down about 1/4" on the front half.

I just looked at my old console. There are no clips on it at all. They must mount to the vehicle first. I may be able to pull mine down this weekend. If I have time I need to swap my rear view out for the autodimming one from a Camry.

I put my clips in on the console and snapped it in. That seemed to work well. Unsure if that is the right way or not but it worked. And I have a right fit with no movement.

Yeah, that's it. I pulled mine this morning and they were on the back. I must have pulled them from my old one for some reason.

Hi, mine started skipping gear teeth as well. Could you please describe in more detail how to fix it? The black gear is flimsy and at the moment I can't figure out how to get it firm back in place. Thx!

Hate to post on such an old thread but I have the same problem on an '05 4Runner. I'm new to 4Runners being a first time owner for only a couple of weeks now, the first upgrade I did was swap out the interior lights from stock to LED. When I was changing out one of the map lights, the switch popped loose and had to remove the overhead console to connect it back into the socket. Now I can't get the overhead console to seat tight, the front hangs down and the metal retaining clips are loose on the plastic pegs...any assistance would be appreciated.
