"Overland" please explain?

Overland just means to travel by Land. The term has been used for a long time and their were many Stage Coach company's that used Overland in their name.

Im starting to get a little annoyed with the whole overlanding thing. It was entertaining for a while but now everyone with a 4x4 and a good camera is a professional overlander on youtube. I like the idea but now I just want to go camping and offroading in the same trip instead of overlanding.

There are awesome people with awesome rigs that only "overland" to work, it doesn't bother me. You can call them posers, or whatever....

What gives overlanding a bad name, are the "overlanders" on IG and Youtube who pretend to be overlanders to get free products or product placement for their videos..... Thats how shady companies ultimately end up ripping people off.

I call bullshit, when they take a photo or video of their undercarriage, and the new car shine is still under there (as in not a spec of dust)......yea....overlanders my anoos. Now I know the whole thing is fake.

How is this done on a 4Runner? I have seen many of Hilux and Rangers with .50 cals mounted on roll bars, but never a 4runner. Bad day when they hit a "popper" designed for a MRAP.

I guess the thing that bothers me about it the most is all the vids that show a line of traffic, nut to butt. I understand having a wingman, but I get enough traffic in my morning commute. Takes away from the great outdoors when you travel in a line of 20 vics waiting for your turn.

i have been doing the whole YouTube thing and watching the goings on, but can't get my head around it. Granted I'm a Cavalry scout and have done my fair share of overland, it just seems most are doing so on trails. Granted its impressive, but not really "overland". I have eaten out of bags and not showered for weeks if not months at a time, breaking trail with dismounts up front in trackless forests in eastern Europe (not to mention certain combat zones in the mid east). Most of what I see is trail riding with creature comforts. Again impressive, but "Overland" ? Why no mention of "way bags"? How long is the normal "overland" trip that requires roof tents, refrigerators and a trailer full of junk? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, just looking to learn more about the sport.

I think you're in the wrong place. Forum-dwellers typically focus on gear. That's ok. Your recon job isn't in the same zip code as some dude living in LA with a body lift, 35s, and full steel body armor. But you already knew that. Good luck on your next Eastern European tour. I hear the EDM scene there favors the unwashed...

when I was single or even when it was just my wife an i it was rougher terrain, and roughing it with sleeping bags and tarps. Doing the alpine loop in colorado with your family two little ones for 6 days with a lot of junk and camping with a travel trailer in comfort is overlanding now. plus you can't cut new trails and have to stay on designated trails by law. In colorado we have to have an ohv sticker for licenced vehicles for some trails and a lot of the land is private so no tresspassing.

Rant beginning...

Why do so many people get caught up the label of overlanding, who really cares?

When I bought my truck I remember saying “I’ll never really go off road, I don’t need a Pro or a trail”. Now, I can’t explore (off pavement) enough...

I bought my truck because it looked cool. After I bought it I researched how I wanted it to look, which led me to many great pics of cool trucks with really cool gear. I didn’t care what they did with their trucks they looked cool. And I wanted mine to look cool too - is that so wrong?

After I started “modding” my truck based on internet searches and downloading countless pictures, I found this forum. This great wealth of knowledge and tips, video tutorials, etc. but most of all the community. It was this forum that led me to want to explore, go do things in my truck that I hadn’t done before.

The people who talk down to somebody who wants a truck to look cool is a j-wagon! If I hadn’t wanted my truck to look cool, I would have never found the explorer in me and taken up several additional hobbies.

I have countless friends who have countless exotic super cars. Do I talk trash to them because they don’t SCCA race every weekend? Because they don’t ship their car to Germany to take on the Autobahn? Isn’t that what those cars were meant to do? No, of course not! They love those cars because the community associated with the ownership. Much like me and my 4Runner.

To me that’s exactly the same as down talking someone because they drive their 4Runner to the mall, and may take a dirt road every now and then. Who cares how dressed up it is or isn’t, it’s their truck! And more so, who cares what they label their activity.

So whether you call it overlanding, driving off-road, rock crawling, 4x4’ing, wheelin’, going on vacation, or any other label you want to associate with it - just enjoy it for what it is. Get in your truck, go somewhere new (I wouldn’t recommend Fallujah), and wave at every 4Runner owner you see. Welcome them with open arms into this incredible community. Encourage them to head somewhere new, meet people they’ve never met and do things they’ve never done. That’s what these trucks and communities are about.

Because lets face it a lot of the disdain comes from people who are using "overlanding" as a marketing term to promote/advertise products and become Instafamous. Believe it or not things like a $4 shower wipe (Shower Pouch) became popular because of social media personalities. As a 5th gen owner I think we all know of a few 5th gen Instalanders that kind of ruined it. I don't care and it doesn't stop me from enjoying myself but overlanding would have been fine without social media. In fact I think a lot of things would be been better without social media.

Most of the people involved in the forums and do overlanding are not what a lot of people are complaining about. To me the annoying part is all these people on youtube and social media using overlanding as a way to get their 5 minutes of fame, without paying attention to whether or not they are hurting or helping the offroad community. Overlanders on this forum seem a lot more genuine than a lot of the social media overlanders.

You obviously don't own an AR-15. If you did, you'd understand why people feel the need to 'accessorize' when it's not really necessary. It's our conspicuous consumption culture at play here.

I built my rig so I can go places these people can't, or won't, because they're too afraid of scratching the paint on their sliders. Or because they're afraid of body damage. I bent a rear lower shock mount and ripped every trim piece off my driver side last run out. It was a 1 mile trail and we had it to ourselves all day long with the exception of a small jeep group.
