First week on my job, I was asked multiple times if I overland because I drive a 4R with a full roof rack. I'm glad no one asked me to define overlanding to them. I'd probably say, "have you ever pulled up to a campsite in your car? there you go! you've overlanded and you didn't even know it."

No doubt there are people with more money than common sense. No matter what what the craze is, there will always be scene-sters that will dogpile on the hot trend.
For those who do it, we are talking about vehicle dependent travel. You are relying on the capabilities of your platform to enhance you’re experience. Whether it’s a two night “glamp” right off the pavement, or sleeping in the back of your truck for a week, it’s still catharsis. Hell, it’s even cathartic for the bros dumping a ton of money into a mall crawler for the sake of pulling tail.
For me, it’s about getting out with my family. I don’t want my boy to grow up with his fondest memories being a screen. No one reminisces about that time nothing happened in the living room. I want to get out and teach him the things I learned from my grandfather, and that isn’t easy to do in suburbia.
Defining requirements, doing research and making decisions is what defines my platform. Dirty diapers, pack-n-play, and a quick exfil are my top concerns. We don’t adventure too far from the beaten path because if everything goes sideways, we can get indoors or to a hospital quick. That means I don’t carry weeks worth of food in a fridge, or carry gas cans. We can hit a grocery store or gas station while we are on the move. I like not sleeping on the ground, but pack-n-plays don’t fit in an RTTs. Ground tent it is!
For those who can afford all the toys, awesome. For those who like their adventure a little more spartan, awesome. It’s your experience. Don’t let the YouTube and IG hype beasts distract you from the most important thing, your adventure.
