This made me laugh- we are all guilty of over modding and packing gear. And I'm sure we all look at some stuff and think WTF, why?
However on another forum much more "over-landing orientated", there was a thread with a poster defending the purchase of $70 titanium fork. This made me laugh my a** off

I bet most of these 4R owners that mod like this are mild preppers, and don't like Big Bruvva in their lives.

Most is for show. Where I work, I often see an older Ford Exploder with shovels, picks, Jerry cans and the whole nine on his daily commuter.
It just screams certain things.

I'd guess someone with more money than time to actually use it.
He has a bunch of KC Daylighters on the grill and roof rack and all kinds of "goodies".
Not my flavor though.
This isn't the desert where the next gas station is 75+ miles away.

When I think of "Ranger" I think of the old ass grampa Ranger SPLASH! that has faded from red to pink, not the newer Terminix/UN wannabes.

Hey now that Ti fork might not matter much for car camping, but ounces add up when you are backpacking.

Very true. A $70 spork makes no sense for truck camping but for ultralight backpacking, where every ounce matters, they are quite popular.
And NOWHERE near $70. Did he buy it from a federal contractor?

I remember my fat ass passing hikers with their 1700 bucks of ultralight gear hiking mountains in CO, pausing only to take swigs from my flask.
What most of us do, myself included is go 4 wheeling/exploring and camping. I do not live out of my rig, nor do I want to. I have a full time job, work way too many hours during the week and live for the days off where I can escape humanity as much as possible! That said my rig is mostly stock. It is not as hardcore as my FJ40’s but sure makes the pavement miles to get to my destinations much more luxo. $70 titanium fork, still laughing my ass off over that one!!! Merry Christmas
I guess to be a true “Overlander” you need to quit your job, get sponsors to pay for all your gear, shamelessly promote product and make a video for every week of your hermits existence. So I am guessing most of us are not, maybe I am a bit jealous of some of those big money rigs! Maybe I need to start making vids to get sponsors to “pimp my ride”, wonder what Exibit is doing these days???
