Overthinking and Confusing Lift Options

Yes, most people will tell me I'm overthinking this, but I don't want to have to replace my struts/shocks for a 4th time in less than a year!

A year ago I purchased an 881/906 OME lift including OME shocks. Too stiff. Far too stiff. Kept the springs, sold the shocks.

Went out on a limb and purchased Rancho RS9000XL adjustable shocks. Worked great for a couple of months then lost compression and started to bounce badly. Was sent 4 replacement shocks by Rancho. Lost compression again within 3 months.

Now I need to go with a different setup. My thoughts below...

Option 1 - Purchase used set of King Coilovers in decent condition for front. Sell OME 881 springs. Keep 906's in rear and add some other shock?

Option 2 - Pair my 881/906 springs with Bilstein 5100's & 5125's.

Option 3 - Pair my 881/906 springs with Rough Country 9000's.

Option 4 - Sell everything and start from scratch.

Here are other important factors. I want a good on road ride. I want it to be stable and planted, but smooth as well. No bouncing, little body roll. I want a decent offroad ride too. I'm thinking fire roads and high speed stuff is more what I do than technical rock crawling. I still have a lot of life in my 265/75/16s so I don't really want to go with a really tall lift. I want to keep things around 2 inches as they are now.

Budget is about $750.

Also, I need to take all stuff off my 4runner within two weeks and have replacement parts by then as it is my daily driver.

I say option 4 then sell off what you have left. Try the toytec ultimate or just do the front coilovers and rear billies since you already have the 906's. Or maybe sell the 906's and buy some 7.5 wrap LC coils?

The 881's are rated at 502lb/in and the toytec's are 600 but if you dont have them turned all they up they'll ride smoother than the OME set up.

The OME shocks were 90004's in the front (not as bad as the rear, but still pretty firm) and 60027's in the rear. Since my purchase ARB has modified their application guide to pair 906's with 60028's instead of 60027's, but I've read that even the 60028's are still too firm.

Intrigued by the Bistein option, for sure.... Nervous that some people say the valving isn't matched well for the OME coils. I don't want to end up with shot Billies in less than a year, ya know?

Toytec ultimate is out of the price range.

I can get a set of used Kings in good shape for $500. Not a good option?

Its all on the condition of the used C/O's. If you think its worth it, go ahead and do that. Then sell the 881 and use that money to get better rear shocks and call it a day.

If the coils are not worth it due to condition, go with #2.

With the OME shocks, I think the front 90004's are decent. Kinda stiff and but they ride well enough. its the rear 60027's that are killer, best thing I ever did was sell mine. So whatever you do, replace those.

No it rides great, with cargo its a bit soft, but unloaded it absolutely perfect. Flex is fine as far as I know, but i'm not an offroad junkie or anything.

Toytec sells the rear 5125's with an eye-stud adapter in the 4runner section, those are what I got. Except where I trashed the adapter and all..

my concern with your situation is you have the 906's, which only lift like what 2"? With the extra length provided with the adapter, you really do need to be at least 3" of lift, unless you do what I did and make new upper mounts.

Option #1 for sure. The Kings or equivalent are adjustable, so you can crank them a bit higher if the need presented itsself. They're also rebuildable, but I don't want to start another debate about that :D

If you decide against that, option #2 would sure go good with the springs you have with your ride requirements.

Have you thought about the tundra trd coils with the bilstein 5100? Even with new parts, I think they'd be less money then the used King coilovers. Then you could sell your 881s. I really have no experience with any brand of lift kits but from what I've read, the trd coilovers make for a comfortable ride on road and are very good off road.

I thought about this, but from what I've read, tundra springs will yield about 2.5" of lift up front. I want to be no higher than 2" as to avoid negative rake. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Don't the tundra struts have bilstien HD's? Everyone I see with the HD's hates them.

Yeah, but many people get 5100's instead. Plus it gives them adjustability.

econ, the tundra's would be a good idea. You can get the 5100's and just keep them on the lowest perch. This should give you roughly 2" of lift and if you get a little more than 2", just get a couple of trim packers for the back. It won't hurt to go a little higher.

I had Bilstein HD's on my 99 and just bought another set for 97. It's my DD and really won't go off road other than maybe camping/skiing. My 99' was on 906's in the rear and tall coils with 1/4" spacers on the front. My 97' will be just 99' tall coils all around.

Where do people buy the right Tundra coils, and how much are they?

SCRunner, are you talking tundra 5100s or tacoma 5100s?

Many people find them through salvage yards or craigslist. I've gotten a set from each, but it takes lots of emails and calling to make sure they are the right ones.

Tundra 5100, from my understanding the lowest perch is just like a stock length tundra shock. I may be wrong, but I plan on switching to 5100's this winter.

I beleive he is talking about the Tundra 5100's.

The Bilstein Tundra 5100's are designed to level the Tundra if set at NO lift (or the lowest perch, as said above) Therefore you should expect about 2" of lift, maybe a hair more when the Tundra 5100's and TRD coils are installed on the 4Runner. Then ad .65" of lift for every notch or perch that you move the retainer up. (5 in total)

I just pulled the trigger on the Tundra setup 2 weeks ago, now waiting to get it installed. I am looking for more lift than you, but they are supposed to ride AMAZINGLY. I am also replacing my OME lift because I think it is toooo stiff and the valving doesnt match the weight of my T4R.
