P rated vs. D rated tires

I was shopping over at Discount Tire the other day looking at the Yokahoma Geolanders and the sales guy was trying to sell me the D rated tires over the Passenger rated as my rig would be too heavy for them. Is this the case?

A little background on my driving habits: I'm primarily on road with very minimal off road applications (will go to the mountains a few times a year to snowboard as well as a couple camping trips). I'll carry at most 3 others in my 4runner, but typically it's just me. I think I should be pretty good with the passenger rated tires don't you think?

A friend of mine in Everett has gone to Discount Tire twice and says they don't know tires as well as they should. My thoughts are that the vehicle comes with passenger tires, that should be fine even if you got to a larger size, its only a 4400 lb car.

Will816 - that was the exact Discount Tire I went to; dude was probably 18 years old. My initial thought was that he was trying to get an additional $150 out of me by selling the D rated.

All they're doing is trying to get more money out of you. I've run plenty of P-rated tires on the 4Runner and they will be more than adequate for what you've got planned. Buy it from another salesman or store.

Oh, the D-rated will be heavier, which means a drop in MPG, not to mention a harsher ride. I hate sales people that don't look at what the customer actually needs.

If you talk to the Discount Tire guy again ask him what pressure would he would use in the D tires on your T4R. My guess is they'll set you up for a high speed blowout in addition to a poor ride and lower mpg. So clueless!:bash:

There are some advantages for some users to having LT tires. IMHO you have to be a 'special needs' driver to warrant LT's on a T4R. If you need a super thick sidewall for climbing over rocks or load the T4R to max GCVW (T4R w/ a big trailer) with great regularity.
