P03050 cylinder 5 misfire

so I started it up this morning cold, clicky clacky knock knock... WTF

I did the lower intake manifold about 500 miles ago... so thinking by messing with the fuel rail and replacing all the o-rings and injector seat... bah who knows.

P03050 cylinder 5 misfire

the timing advance is way up like 27 and the fuel trims are dumping like tons of fuel trying to make up for it, I think.

so... off to find a new injector.

these things just keep happening :(

I did a new injector from napa says Asin on it? could be exactly the same as OEM or really good fake?

anyways after doing that it runs ruff but still kids and knocks intermittently

any ideas?

what would help me figure out what to do next?

so I'm guessing my engine is toast

I pulled the plug for #5,#3 and that is interesting... hmm not sure the electrode is supposed to be smashed in like that?

so much for the 5vzfe being a non interference engine.

So I grabbed the bore scope and took a look, yikes

and #3 for reference

WTF? What was in that cylinder?

All I can think is the top of piston is no longer connected to the bottom... or for whatever reason the piston has grown taller.

Why it would just decide to do this from a cold start I have no idea.

Regardless this engine has ended its journeys.

Maybe the bearing cap got tired of the Minnesota winters. Can you see the valves? Any damage? I remember someone lost a bolt in a cylinder once, it bounced around for 200 miles or so until it destroyed the valves. But no noise beforehand.

Man what a bummer. I've been reading your build and posts.Feel for you but you are definitely well versed in the 3rd gen to do a swap or fix. As a father of two little ones I am impressed by your work knowing the difficulties of time.

No my bore scope is a cheap one I cannot aim it once it’s inside.

I will find out when I pull things apart. Yea I did have the lower intake apart but it’s been almost 500 miles since any repairs. I’m pretty careful about putting down tape or rags to plug up holes.

I’m trying to figure out what to do now. Get a JDM, find a junkyard engine, try to find a quality rebuild? I have the engine I just pulled but that truck was pink milkshake, so I’m not really hot on using that engine.

Maybe pull this engine, drop the pan, replace that piston and head? That might be the cheapest option.

Something got into that cylinder most likely a piece of metal. Notice how the marks are not uniform. It bounced around until it smacked into your spark plug. I would not think there is anything wrong with the bearings and rod but as you say I would replace that engine. I would carefully check everything upstream of the intake valve to see how something got in there I have heard of the spark plugs themselves having pieces come off but that does not seem to be your problem

Yes I will. Thinking about shooting an engine removal vid, I have not seen one done.

We show an engine removal in our V8 Swap video but things were happening fast with a couple people wrenching at the same time and me running around with the camera trying to capture it all. So, it wasn't as detailed as I would have liked it to be to show somebody how to remove an engine from one of these rigs. We also didn't separate the trans from the engine because we lifted the entire body off the chassis.

It would be great if you made a video of it.

well the bad news maybe got a lot worse

I pulled off the top end and the super charger had gumball rattle? hmmm that is not good? poured some some steel nuggets. they stick to the magnet.

then what is even stranger? right behind the throttle body you can see something was I don't know? scraping or sliding along? I can't find a dam thing anyplace else along the path that is broken off so honestly I have no idea what it is that got in there behind the throttle body, the gasket is still intact so?

I guess I need to take the head off and see if I can figure out what the heck broke off? also pull the nose cone off the super charger and see how bad it looks inside it.

I have never left anything inside an intake and I'm kind of weirdo maticulious about tripple checking everything when I put it back togeather... god dammit.

Wow, that's really a bummer. I'd double check your supercharger rotors while you are at it too, they may be scored and lose boost.

This really sucks.

if you take the cone off, following the order of bolt removal of course... do the rotors just slide right out?

I have not taken one apart yet.

I ordered a dressed long block from yota shop this morning so I should be back on the road soon but I'm not planning on being super no more. doug headers are supposed to be here tomorrow as well... I figured I would have to move the engine around to get them in... but now that part will be easy if it's out.

Yeah, you'll just need some supercharger oil to re-fill it if you do. If it's not too bad you can sand the edges of the rotors and the housing itself with very fine sandpaper, did that to mine when I rebuilt it to remove some small scoring in the housing. Just don't sand the rotors too much or the coating will start to flake off.

So do you believe that something in the SC broke, then got sucked into cylinder 3?

No it's more likely something got sucked in the engine since there was scoring in the throttle body and then somehow one of those chunks passed through the supercharger into the cylinder. There's nothing in the supercharger that can break off, it's literally just an aluminum housing (non-magnetic) with solid rotors. It's surprisingly simple.
