96 4runner 4x4 Very Rare 5 Speed Heat, Air Rear Diff Locker 20+MPG OBO

thinking about buying this 4runner from a member on here and was wanting some insight on these codes and if i should be all that worried about them (the knocking one sounds scary) . Also if anyone knows what might be wrong with the 4x4 or some insight on how to fix it that would be helpful. Overall it seems like a great deal and ill probably get it wither way because of its off road potential. Thanks for your help!

Don't worry about the knock sensor at the most it could slightly throw off mpg. 4x4 is the only worry some part of this there are a lot of different things that could be wrong. It could be the t-case itself which is pricey or it could be as easy as changing the bushings on the linkage. If we knew if it stayed in 4lo that would be helpful. Good luck!

okay ill ask him if it stays in 4lo and if so, for how long. Any other questions i should ask?

There is quite a few things wrong with this truck. If they were all that easy to fix then I feel the owner would just do it and get a better price on it. If he has neglected these items this far, what else has been neglected.

He also states that the truck is NOT a POS. It's my unprofessional opinion when people have to re-enforce what they are already stating (Example: It's not a POS, I promise.) then they are lying. I'm sure someone won't like my opinion on the lying part. Just my view.

he says "the 4lo stays in gear for a little bit then the light in the dash goes off and the hubs kick out" also he states that " it is not the hubs or transmission" leaving it to be either the vacuum lines or the fuses?

I'd stay away from it honestly. When you get into vacuum lines it gets expensive fast. And I'm not convinced that it doesn't need a new t case and vacuum lines. It's a good deal if you can do all your own work and know what your doing tho. Good luck. You could always have a mechanic look at it before buying it.

I've participated in every ADD thread on here for the last several years. I have never seen one where the system worked to engage 4wd and then popped out. There are not many ways how the ADD system could cause that. If it works to engage, why wouldn't it stay engaged?

The one theory I have is the check valve. If it pops out when you first decelerate, coast or otherwise allow revs to drop, it is definitely the check valve. A cheapie from NAPA works fine and is less than $10. I guess a pinhole vacuum leak could cause it, too, but it's usually an all or nothing with vac leaks.

If it's not the check valve, then I'd say it's your ADD actuator in the front diff or something in the TC and those would be uncheap.
