P0340, problems after mudding

Hey guys,

I've got a pretty serious but pretty vague problem I wanna run by here to see if anyone knows what the problem is/knows how to fix it. The other week I went mudding in some pretty deep puddles, the entire engine compartment was submerged and the RPMs got up pretty high at one point. The next day when I tried to start my 4runner (2004 Sport Edition, V8) it wouldn't start. I thought it was an ignition problem. After a couple tries I would eventually get her started, but when I did the engine never fired right up like it used to, and when it was running it sounded slightly off (not too serious, I just know how it should sound when healthy). Since then, it still doesn't fire straight up into the right sound like it used to. When I'm driving, I notice a sort of whurring sound when I've got my foot off the gas. Really hard to explain the sound, but it almost sounds like when the car is rolling something is inhibiting it from going completely neutral? I knew something was definitely wrong when I had to come to a hard stop when someone in front of me slammed on their brakes, when I slammed on mine, I came to a stop, but when I tried to accelerate again there was a shudder/loud noise from the engine like the transmission skipped something?
I have a Bluedriver code reader and it came up with the P0340 code (Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circut Bank 1 or Single Sensor). From what I can figure out, my issue is either with that sensor, the drivetrain not being greased, or my transmission fluid...

If anyone has any knowledge of a problem like this/how to solve it PLEASE let me know. I'm a college student that doesn't have much money to spend on taking my car in to a mechanic, I've done a bunch of work on my 4runner myself and am hoping to god that I can figure this one out without a mechanic too.

It sounds like cam timing might be off. This could either be a huge deal or a simple sensor being out.

Check your air cleaner and cleaner housing for mud and other debris. Clean the MAF with electrical cleaner.

Replace the cam sensor. Inspect the wiring and connector very closely for signs of improper contact or other defects (exposed wiring, kinks, etc.)

How many miles?

Looks like you have to take timing cover off to get to it. This is an opportunity to observe condition of timing belt.

What did you ever find out about your engine problem? I had a similar issue after getting it stuck in water just above the bottom of the driver door. Ran ok for the next week then started getting codes P0335 & P0340 (camshaft & crankshaft position sensor). I figured the sensors got water on them but it doesn't throw the codes any more so I'm not to worried about it. Now I'm dealing with a starter problem.
