P0430-How to tell exactly what's wrong.

I have a 2006 4Runner and the Engine, Slip Indicator & VSC Trac light keep coming on. When I run a scan I get the P0430 code.
Is there a way to tell whether it is the O2 sensor or converter?
I use the "Torque" android app and on the tests screen there are 2 "Fails"

P0430 is a Cat code unfortunately.

P0420 would be Bank 1

The best way to determine if you need a new sensor or a new catalytic converter is to find a mechanic with a scan tool that pulls live data. Using the live data feature, he can see if the sensors are functioning correctly. Using the same data he should be able to tell you whether the catalytic converter is functioning or not.

P0420 would be Bank 1

Most likely the downstream sensor and not the cat.

Truthfully I don't know. I skipped over plug-in phone dongles and went straight to a separate OBDII scan tool. If the app allows you to read O2 sensor voltages, then you can compare the front and rear O2 sensors to see if they are functioning correctly. The same voltage readings will also tell you if the catalyst is functioning efficiently.

Start at the cheapest fix 1st ie rear o2 sensors (amazon) ! Work fwd ! V6 - V8 ?

All I said was that it was a Cat code. Not a failed cat.

Don't replace the O2 sensors you will be wasting your money. The only way P0420, 0430 are set is when the downstream sensor is mimicking or mirroring the upstream sensor. this tells the ECU that the cat is not cleaning the exhaust. If there was a bad sensor you would get a code for an O2 sensor. There is no way for a bad sensor to read the same as a good one. Sorry to say but it is your cat. Some advise do NOT buy an aftermarket cat. The reason they are cheaper is they don't put the proper amount of material inside and you will end up with the code coming back. This has happened to many people on this forum. In CA and NY it's illegal to purchase aftermarket cat due to emission laws.
