P0500 - Can't clear the code

OK so, I've had the check engine, VSC trac, VSC off, brake, and abs lights on and my speedometer and odometer are non functional.

I had 2 code readings done, both came up P0500, vehicle speed sensor.

So last weekend I replaced the vehicle speed sensor.

I disconnected the battery for an hour to re-set the code. None of the lights were on and the speedometer was working. I drove about a mile and all the lights came back on and the speedometer stopped working. And it has been the same the past few days.

Has anyone else had this problem? This is a 2001 4runner, with about 192K miles.

Having the same exact issue with my '06 Sport Edition V8. Same P0500 code, but have yet to replace speed sensors. Where did you order yours from?

I am having this P0500 problem with my 96 model. I dont have all of that vsc stuff that you newer models have but I do have ABS. It has been suggested to me that the ABS is to blame in this scenario. I did a lot of troubleshooting and finally decided to pull the ABS computer from the passenger kick panel and open it up. Sure enough there was a blown capacitor and some burnt out components. I have not purchased a replacement but its next on my list. Unfortunately I wont be able to get to it until January. I have seen a couple of ebay used ones for $25. I dont know if the 2001s are different or more expensive but if its as cheap as mine then its worth a try just to open it up and do a visual inspection.

Edit: My other reasoning for pulling the ABS computer out is because I was getting an error when I tried to pull ABS codes through the diagnostic port using a paper clip.

I would start by cleaning/replacing the cam and crank position sensors. i'm relatively new to the 4runner, but most cars receive their engine speed input via those two sensors. vehicle speed is via the electro/magnetic speed sensor in the tranny (the one that controls the speedo in the cab). so if the vehicle speed sensor in the tranny has already been replaced, perhaps the next logical step is to move on to engine speed sensors (cam position sensor, and crank position sensor)
