P1782 Transfer Case Actuary Jammed Internally

During a recent snow storm our 2004 4Runner (V8 with 80K miles) had a problem shifting out of 4LO. I took it to the dealer to find out that the transfer case actuator is jammed internally (P1782) and they recommend the transfer case be replaced ($3900). I think not!!! The car is making no noise and is driving fine. After they did the diagnostic test, the check engine list, VSC lights, and 4LO lights are ALL on. Any ideas on what may be wrong or what we should do now???? Please help!

Try a zero point calibration. I'd also get some fresh t-case fluid in it. A fresh load of synthetic t-case oil may help to clean any sludge and prevent further issues.

Reviving and old thread....

I tried to fix my transfer case actuator leak with a new o-ring today by taking it off and then re-installing it. The first time back on the truck, I got a horrendous grinding noise, all the lights (VSC/ABS/etc) went on and I couldn't get the truck out of 4LO. ugh... took everything off again, reinstalled the actuator and the 4Lo/4HI is working once again. I then used this thread and did the 'zero point calibration' and cleared all the faults.

I think the actuator was not engaged completely and it threw the P1782 code along with the VSC/ABS lights.

Other than needing to replace the oil seals on the actuator, the truck is back on the road.

If you get the P1782 code, it may not be the end of the day...
