Paint corrosion on Limited wheels

Hi Guys,

I have browsed the multiple posts about the paint on the sport and ltd wheels bubbling and chipping. 3 of the 4 wheels on my 08 ltd have spots that are bubbling up and will start to flake off soon. I don't use any sort of solvent on them and wash the truck regularly.

Has anybody had any luck getting toyota to cover this under warranty? I have the 7 yr 100k plan.

Also, I am not sure if I want to go through the hassle of getting them replaced just to have the next set do the same thing. Obvs the product is crap, so why replace crap with crap. Thinking of just sucking it up and getting them powdercoated. Thinking a slightly darker gunmetal on the black runner would look nice.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I tried with no luck on my '05 Tacoma wheels. The dealer even went as far to say "it's due to the fog and elements of where you live, look at the chassis underneath your truck. The rust is terrible."

Some reason the Taco just rusts a lot faster underneath than my Camry. Both have been outside for the same amount of time.

I undercoat all of my Toyotas with rustoleum rubberized undercoating from walmart when new. $4 a can and 6 cans will do a 4Runner. Doesn't stop the rust but slows it way down.

My wheels are like new and we have tons (literally) of salt on the roads here every year. Go back & complain. You got a bad set.

Started on my '03 SE 2years after purchase -- in VA and I washed them wih carwash soap frequently. Booo!

A mechanic told me that the new liquid salt they use on icey roads is 10 times more damaging to vehicles especially wheels and undercarage because it can get into places it wasn't likely too when salt was granular. However, the flaking wheels we were discussing, were on an '03 T4R. He recommended oil guard every fall but had no solution for flaking wheel paint.

I was able to get all five wheels replaced under warranty. Ours is an 2007 Black SR5 4x4 w/v-6. w/ optional 17'' alloy wheels. 30k miles. The Sullivan Bros. Toyota Kingston, MA Did try to get the wheels refinished in november. But when I rotated my wheels I still had corrossion on the back side. It appears the used a spray "aluminum paint" of some sort and sprayed the brake hose. Not a problem as I coat all my rubber under body parts with silicone grease from NAPA. My guess is that the factory didn't put too much lacquer on the wheels. My fords don't seem to have this problem. I am planning to keep a coat of wax "Kit Brand" on these new ones. I also plan on keep spray painting the underbody and frame w/ black paint. This worked out really well for my 1998 Ford windstar. It had almost no rust after 9 years of being parked outside. We live about 800 ft from the Ocean. We don't use our 4runner on the beach. Kingston is about 30 miles south of boston.

I have to say Sullivan Bros has an excellent parts counter.David Smith was able to get me hard to find parts such as a wiper blade for a 91 camry. Thanks. I know this has little to do w/ wheels, but I think credit should be given where it is due.

My 07 has the same pitting problem on all 5 wheels. It will look terrible in another year. Dealer in Vancouver,Canada says it is out of warranty and not interested at all at helping. I like the truck otherwise but will not likely buy another Toyota because of this. Is this very common?

FWIW my dealer had my wheels re-finished under warranty. The wheel corrosion is a common problem in areas where heavy road salt is used. They use the liquid salt brine here too and it has eaten the wheels on 2 Suburbans, 1 Denali, 1 Honda CRV (horribly). For some reason the wheels on My Lexus & Rav4 are unaffected. But the SUV's all took quite a toll. My next new truck will go to a professional undercoating shop.

It is not just the road salt that corrodes the wheels. I bought a 4runner in FL which had been there its entire life and its wheels were pitted and corroded. I guess it could have been from the salt in the air near the ocean? My solution is to use a drill with a wire wheel attachment to buff them down and then spray with matching wheel paint. I do that once every couple years and it keeps the wheels looking decent. Its hard to tell they are damaged unless you inspect them closely. I have the sr5 5 spoke fatty wheels. It stinks the wheels are corroding but its no reason to abandon the truck.

My wheels were bubbling, peeling, etc. I ended up stripping, sanding, and recoating with Duplicolor wheel paint. Others have had luck recoating with Plasti-Dip. Both come in several colors and finishes.
