Paint question for motorcycle frame?

Hi there,

So I have an old "motorcycle" (been in the family 20 years) that I dug out of the garage and it needs paint. It's an old Honda Monkey bike and it's worth maybe $200 (doesn't run). However, I've grown attached to it and want to rebuilt it now since I'm still looking for a project car. I've ordered an engine rebuild kit already and am anxiously waiting.

Question now, the Rust Oleum Enamel Yellow spray can is the PERFECT color I want. However, I know that Rust Oleum isn't the best paint, so I'm wondering if I can spray an automotive 2 part clear over it and it will last a long time. Or would the paint somehow fade underneath the clear?

I know I can get automotive paint, but the bike is so cheap that it's barely worth the spray paint, let alone getting the paint color matched for $150 or so.

Alright, please let me know, I'm anxious to start my Monkey bike project.

Hey man! I'm rebuilding an '81 Honda CB750 in my spare time. Progress is super slow but over the winter I should have a bit more time on my hands.

I researched a lot about painting the frame on various DIY and motorcycle forums and everyone pretty much said the same thing. To do it right the first time, strip the frame down to bare metal using aircraft remover and steel wool (the paint literally bubbles right off and it removes a lot of surface rust as well), then coat the frame in POR-15 rust reverser/preventative, then paint it using automotive paint, and finish it off with a clear coat if you want.

I was only planning to use the POR-15 for the frame and leaving it unpainted. The POR-15 is nearly chip/scratch-proof, is self-leveling when applied with a paint brush, and dries in a nice matte black.

^^Re: "Do it right the first time." I was "afraid" of that, meaning that I know my wife isn't going to be happy that I spend money for the Monkey. She hates it anyway, haha.

Either or, thanks a bunch for the tips, I appreciate it! I have one more question though. You said "rust reverser", and I find that online places sell the stuff as "rust preventative paint" Same thing? Or is there a specific undercoating that they sell like a build up primer?

It seems like their paint is just meant to go on as the final color and that's it, but I mind be not reading that correctly.

Yup, do it right or you will be doing it again in a year or two.
Take it down to bare metal,get rid of any rust, do any body work , degrease it
scuff, prime and seal for rust prevention, degrease, scuff, paint, degrease ,scuff, clear.

I dont think there would be a problem with clearing over the rust oleum.
But you may want to research that a little more.
