Paint Question

My trailer hitch is black but has considerable rust. I'm going to paint it, but want to know the best method. I know it sounds elementary, but I've never painted anything automotive. My plan is to remove it, sand it and paint it. Whats the best paint to use? Are there any additional steps I should take, or an easier way to fix my problem?

I'm wondering the same thing, I was just going to try and use a black rustoleum spray can. I'm not sure which type of rustoleum would match what's already on there since it's not very glossy.

Use por-15 rust converter and chassis black paint over that! The chassis black is also made by por-15! Even though your sand blasting it there are pits or pours that you can't see that rust will sit in so use the rust converter! You can either brush or spray it on! A pint of each should be more than enough!

:iagree:
This will work without sandblasting it.
knock off heavy scabby rust and brush it on, works great.

After I used an angle grider to remove all of the rust, i wiped everything down with Windex to remove any dust, grease or contaminates. Then I used spray on bed liner from Autozone. I applied 3 coats following the directions on the can. It turned out perfect!
