paint your exhaust pipe??

so i was just thinking, has anyone tried to paint their exhaust pipe? you know for those of us without the cool stainless steal. i was thinking about painting my pipe with some black high heat paint? what do yall think? would this cause some damage? or would it work like the header tape stuff and reduce the heat etc?

Are you talking the entire exhaust system or are you talking about the tailpipe? I've never done the muffler, can't see it.

I paint my tailpipe, rearend, fenderwells, front skid plate, etc... every Spring time. Have to especially living in Northeast.

oh ive got a pretty nice tip, im just thinking the pipe is brown with the tip on it so ya know i gotta go wit some flow.

Do they make pink in high heat?? id be rockin then! id just need to find some big ears put some more pink and it would look like some evil easter bunny mobile! lol!

Ya that black chrome would be insane! i wonder if its durable and long lasting? thanks for the info though man mmmm i wish i had some cash to spend to clean up my "to do" mod list. aghhhh so tempting to put it on the plastic! :bash:

if you mix gloss black with chrome paint, you get a very nice mixture of a dullish black, but glossy chrome; hard to explain.

01t4rnr has the right idea. Just get a tip that is long enough so that it doens't show any of the exhaust pipe. That's what mine does.

They make black chrome tips too, FYI.

I have a 4th gen, but still I paint my stock exhaust tip flat black every spring. It came painted flat black from the factory and I like it that way, so just a regular old can of flat black spray paint applied each spring keeps it looking brand new.

Personally, I hate shiny exhaust tips, so no bling on my tailpipe. I think it look especially funny with the 4Runner's single exhaust pipe. Maybe it wouldn't look so bad on duals, or even fake duals that I see some guys buying and installing.

wow so that paint wont come off from the heat?, ya and sorry guys im not a huge fan of the "longer" chrome tips either. i think the black wouldnt look bad with the tip i do have.

Nope, the paint sticks just fine. If you think about it, the exhaust tip doesn't really get very hot.

I had a black chrome tip from AAP, but it only lasted a few months. Couldn't find anyone else who made bolt on ones.

haha really? dang i wish it would stop snowing and warm up here and i could do some painting. :b did you use just duplicolor stuff? I would think that pipe gets hot cause it discolors some of those chrome tips you see out there. it even kind of cahnged the color of my stainless magnaflow tip.

nah, I used Krylon flat black, the
same stuff I used on my rear spoiler. then again, I do have the stock exhaust that's bare metal... just decided to paint it because

1. it's a god awful eyesore
2. I want the only brown on my truck to be mud
3. I had paint
4. I am gonna redo my entire exhaust system anyway, aside from the headers I already did

I just buy Krylon or Duplicolor. I buy the satin/semi-gloss paint. It seems to hold up fine. I did my wife's Maxima this past weekiend and I will probably do my truck this weekend, barring the weather is good. I have a chrome tip and chrome tow hooks that I clean with steel wool and they look as good as new.
