Painted Brake Calipers

I just replaced both front calipers on my 05' Sport and already they are starting to rust and it's driving me nuts. Someone had suggested that I clean, seal and paint them in order to solve the problem.

Has anyone done this to their calipers before?

I'm looking at purchasing this kit High Perf Caliper Paint Kit and this sealant Rust Fix® for the job.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

With my old 2001 Accord...I wanted eliminate the rust & retain the factory appearance.

I used
• Steel Wool
• High Temp Black Spray Paint

I only masked stuff off, I didn't disconnect the brake line because I didn't want to bleed them after.

My friend used the Dupi-Color High Performance Caliper Brake Kit as you mentioned.

He too wanted to retain the factory appearance...but he added a Lexus sticker on the caliper, because he wanted it to show through his 19" rims. Of course he used some kind of sealer after, so the sticker will stay & not fall off.

I don't know exactly his procedures, but he either used Steel Wool or a Wire Brush.

He also only masked stuff off...because he was lazy. I know...cuz he would have asked me to help him bleed his brakes haha

Im doing this next time I juice my brakes, ill post pictures on this thread when I do. Doing them red...if it looks bad then going to good ol black. Anything color beats rust though.

Going with the duplicolor method above though, seems to be the most common and inexpensive way.

Picked up the supplies today and hopefully I'll have them both done sometime tomorrow. Going with the black satin finish.

Yeah, I'm actually going to do this too when I replace my calipers. I'm just going to use high temp paint, and probably black or silver. I like the sticker idea, but don't know how that would work.

Not to derail, but did you replace your calipers with toyota oem? Did you replace them because of the frozen piston? Also has easy was this to do? Replacing brake pads isn't hard, but I'm wondering about how hard it will be to replace the calipers? I'm no mechanic but I've replaced struts and springs, added a lift, oil and dif/t-case fluid change... basically the basic stuff.

Should be pretty easy to do. I've removed the caliper before on my Tacoma (same as the 4Runner's) to replace the wheel studs. Remove the brake line bracket on the spindle arm. There are two bolts on the back of the caliper that holds it to the spindle.

Torque specs:
Caliper bolts are 91ft-lb.
Brake line union is 11ft-lb.
Bleeder plug is 8ft-lb.

acually i did it this past summer when i replaced my front calipers. i used high temp engine enamal. just degreased the caliper real good with spray brake cleaner and sprayed them red.let em dry over night and they look great even now 6 months later. hit em with water when i wash the runner and the look as good the day i painted them

Got started today but managed to only get the rust off one caliper before I ran out of sanding pads :dammit:

Hopefully have it done tomorrow.

Wow...absoulutely LOVE the red calipers, and would like to have them on my Titananium Sport Edition. However there's not a chance I'm going to try that myself. Does anyone have a suggestion for a place in Southern California / Orange County area to do that??

Finished this project today. Took about 4 hours. Very easy to do and I'm happy with the final result.

same exact thing happend to my calipers about a week after i got them.

now wanting to do the same but i have a few questions regarding the rust fix..

did you just spray with the rust fix then sand then painted? or just skipped the rust fix and sanded them down and painted??

I'd like to assume that the cheapest way to keep calipers clear of oxidation is the sand them down to remove existing rust and to wash the under body and brake components often.

Rusty calipers may be a sign for rusty undercarriages?! :hunter::wow::gun5:

Other than that, go buy some Brembo stickers on ebay and put them on the brake calipers.
