Hey has anyone found a decent solution to all of these scratched interior door pulls and consoles in these 5th generation 4runners. I have a couple good scatches down to the black plastic on mine and its driving me nuts. I looked on partznet and it looks like I have to buy the whole interior door panel for $500 plus?? I even looked at aftermarket trim kits and they don't cover the right areas. Any help would be appreciated. Love this new truck and 1st Toyota after a Chevy, but not used to this kind of crappy interior workmanship--and that should be saying something having had an old Trailblazer.

Those same panels in our '14 TE are painted a metallic dark grey. I'm wondering how well that painted surface will hold up over time. There used to be lots of wood kits for dash panels, door panels, etc, and also some metal ones, like brushed stainless. I wonder if any of those stick-on kits are still available, and whether anyone makes some for the gen5?
Drives me nuts too. For the life of me, I can't understand why Toyota persists to use this crappy material for 5 years running. I just bought a lightly used 2011 Limited after test driving 5 before it ranging from 2010-2013. Every single vehicle I looked at showed visible scratches on at least the driver's door, sometimes on the console and passenger doors. The vehicle I purchased was in mint condition... with the exception of these superficial scratches. I checked to see if they were covered by warranty since it is clearly faulty material and not typical wear-and-tear, but the claim got denied. Instead I got a quote for replacement. Here is what the dealer said...
The silver trim on the door handles are part of the door panel assembly, the handles are not serviced or sold separately. Each door trim panel is $916.47 and $122.95 each to install.
The center console trim panel is $355.10. It too is an assembly and is $122.95 to install.
Door#1 with tax $1094.41
Door#2 with tax $1094.41
Center console with tax $499.35 for a total estimate of $2688.17.
Prices include, parts, tax and labor only.

Same problem here. my interior is like new, minus scratches all over this silver plastic junk trim. I bet water color paints could hold up better than this.

Maybe time for custom "paint protection film"?
Hydro-dipping seems like the right answer. To hell if I'm paying $2700 for replacements that will only scratch over again.
Anyone know the best way to remove the trim pieces without breaking clips/fasteners? I'm mostly interested in doing the door handles, but would consider color matching the console too.

I imagine a coat of Cerakote or even a hydro dip would be the simplest fix. anyone have instructions on removing the center console?

Sure, basically buy this stuff: 3M DI-NOC Carbon Fiber Vinyl
There are a million retailers selling it, and the finishes and colors are almost endless if you don't like straight carbon fiber.

Just need the material, and heat gun to help flex the material around the curves. It already has adhesive on the backside.
Total cost, maybe 30 bucks if you already have a heat gun (or hair dryer).
That 3M DI-NOC looks really good. Cheap too. Think I'm going to do it. Anyone have advice on how to remove the silver door pulls, console, steering wheel parts? Are they easy to pop off without breaking (that would suck)? Any releases to look for? Thanks in advance, helpful stuff guys.

I came over from m3forum.net after trading my M3 for a 4runner. There are tons of guys wrapping their interior trim pieces, and I considered doing it, but never did. Hop over there and search around. I will either wrap or take the trim off, and have an auto body shop paint them when the trim becomes scratched up

No problem guys, just make sure you get the 3m product, there are many generics out there that look terrible. You can even get swatch samples for free from the 3m site. People have wrapped their whole cars with this stuff.

:nicethread: :thumb: Plenty rain here today so I ended up detailing my interior in the garage and noticed quite a few scratches on my driver side door handle....gonna wait and see if anyone has an answer on taking the door handles off without lifting the whole door panel? :noidea:
