painted my rear drums

lets face it, there is nothing sexy about drum brakes, the only thing you can do is just make them look a little better, I like the black gloss look a lot better than rust, I painted up my drums this weekend mainly cuase I just wanted to figure out my new sandblaster ( in preparation for some underbody blasting next week prior to some por-15 rust converter ). ive had drums powder coated before and even used non- high temp paint rattle cans and have had great success with both of them, but I wasn't in the mood to drop 100$ on powder for some old nasty drums, and generally stray away from eye catching colors like red, when it comes to the calipers that's a different story. there isn't a right or wrong way to do this but my drums popped right off no problem, hit them both with the sand blaster for a little bit till ( most ) of the rust was gone, then gave them a wipe down with some acetone and sprayed them with dupli-color engine enamel primer, and gloss black engine enamel. they came out pretty nice, ill post pictures of them on the truck later tonight.

I was looking at doing this yesterday. How do the drums come off? All my wheels are off right now and I'd paint them real quick if I could get them off the hub.

Rubber mallet usually. They're supposed to have a small hole for a screw to go into to help push the unit out but mine didn't have it so mallet time! Luck. :banana:

Dont hammer on the drums! This can actually damage the rear axle bearings and seals causing them to leak. There is a hole in the back of the drum. Take off the rubber cover. Shine light in. You will see a little gear with teeth. Next to this is a plate that you have to press on to release the lock and then use flat head screw driver to screw the gear down which will back the pads off the drum and loosen it. I usually use the 90* end of an allen wrench to push on the plate. If you screw up you will hear it click which is tightening so dont go that way.

Can you not just paint the drums on the axle? I've done this before with no issues.

you could paint them with them still on the hub, but I found it much easier to sandblast and prep for paint with them taken off, there are tons of ways to shimmy them off the hub. even cheap rattle can black drums look way better than rusty ones, even if they need re-done once every year or two, other than some elbow grease youll only have 5$ bucks in high temp paint invested in the project

I just did mine yesterday, painted them on the hub..although it was easy because I replaced them and the leaking axle seals...

There's nothing to worry about using a mallet to get the drums off. Much easier, much faster. Give each of them one good shot and they'll come right off.
