Painted my wheels Charcoal, much better

These wheels were in horrible shape. Just cosmetically, no curbing or deep scratches. The finish just had a bad spidering corrosion thing goin on and it looked like crap. I like the wheels themselves and decided just to paint them instead of swapping for new ones.

The worst part was getting the old finish completely off. Bought a nice sanding wheel and it worked out great. I did end up giving up on the drill and opted for the air gun (more RPM and the batteries don't die). Cleaned them up with brake cleaner and then went to priming and painting. I used Rust-Oleum black primer and Charcoal Gray for the finish. I didn't bother taping the tires off as I have received my Kumhos and they will be on shortly.

I don't know if I like the "flat" finish or not. Maybe it will grow on me, or I may have to fine sand it and clear coat.

just bought me a set of the limited 5 star wheels, im looking forward to doing this as well. yours turned out really nice though..im just hoping i can get somewhere in that ballpark
 
Dude, this is almost exactly the color I'd like to do with my wheels once I get the lift & KM2's on. Very nice! :bravo: Can we see some pics of them on the truck?
 
I only have the two done right now. They're actually drying as I'm typing, just sprayed the 2nd coat. I'll get install pics after the weekend when I'll have the new Kumhos and Toytec lift. I highly suggest getting the 3M Stripper wheel, it worked 10x better than my wire wheel.

Just finished up the topcoat on wheels 3 and 4 yesterday and plan to clear them tomorrow. The first two I'm not real happy with and plan to resand and shot them again. For some reason they didn't take the paint evenly? Fun project nonetheless. Did them black.
 
Man! if anybody needed to paint there wheels it was you. Those things were looking rough but pretty sweet now. So what are you going to do with the overspray on the tire? did you know about the deck of cards trick?

haha Agreed! Shoulda used some cards around the rim cause that overspray is gonna look funny now when you mount 'em back up.
 
Nice! Pics once on please! My wheels are in worse shape than yours! Gonna do the same thing, but I think go with a gloss finish instead of flat. Also, I'm going to wait till I get new tires as well that way I don't mess them up in the meantime. Soooo, sometime at the end of next summer!
 
Yeah I know the oversparay looks like dirt for a couple days but I'm slipping the new Kumhos on tomorrow if possible. That's why I didn't care about the overspray

I wondered about painting my wheels before mounting new tires....better tell em to mount her gently.

I just went that route. He did do some slight damage to the rim getting my new Michelin LTX M/S2 on the first wheel. He said he'd be more careful on the second and he was. Came through unscathed. Rear pair are waiting until Spring for budgetary reasons. Graphite in front, silver in back for the winter, meanwhile I'm going to work on trim, bumpers, etc.

Now that both are done, I'm going to touch up the boo-boo's on the first one tomorrow.
 
"I'll" be careful when "I" mount them. I don't trust anyone to do ANY of my maintenance and I like doing it myself. I even change the oil in my wife's warrantied VW Rabbit. When I need a lift or tire mounting and balancing machines we have a 20 stall "Hobby Shop" on base that lets us use all of the equipment and do our own maintenance and just charges hourly depending on what were using. Pretty sweet. I take advantage of that place every chance I get.

I did find that I have a bad (leaking) driver's side wheel cylinder. That's why the brakes are a little spongy. :offtopic: But important to inspect with wheels removed. I had to scrape about a pound of dirt/brake fluid crud from the inside of that wheel. Would have been a ***** to balance!

Nice! I wish there were a place like that for us civilians. Liability insurance would be brutal, but I'm guessing the military gets a free pass on that. Sovereign immunity is a wonderful thing.
 
:dammit:I didn't get a chance to go to the shop today. Did however get a new wheel cylinder for tomorrow, dropped front skid plates and used leftover wheel paint to match them.

NO, I dint bother painting the inside of the wheels. They're just 16" wheels with what looks like 14" brakes so the inner wheel isn't really visible so I didn't bother. Maybe if they were 24's, but I'd never own 24's!
