Painted Rims Black...

After deciding I wanted black rims, I had to decide between buying new ones and painting my stock rims. In the end it came down to the price difference...for less than 40 dollars, compared to around 1000 dollars, I was able to paint my rims and actually make emm look half decent! Take a look! (i also painted my calipers red! and paint the toyota logo on the wheels to accent emm)

what kinda of paint did u use/where did u get it? maybe a quick explanation of the process? looks sweet, i just may do that

Looks good man, now you just need some 5% or 20% window tint all aroun and it'll look better. Some weathertech vent visors would look good to...
 
1st step: Remove wheels and tires from car

2nd: (kept tires on wheels)Wash wheels and tires with soap (scrub thouroughly)

3rd: Use some type of degreaser (bought some from Kragens) and clean the wheels. Then rinse wheels off with water and dry thouroughly

4th:Used some steel wool and 1000 grit sand paper to ruff up the wheels a bit.

5th: Used Duplicolor Sandable Primer (Black) and put a primer coat on all 4 wheels

6th: Sanded the primer coat with 1000 grit paper, and added another primer coat

7th: Sanded 2nd primer coat again using 1000 grit paper

8th: Used Duplicolor Low Gloss (Black) paint and sprayed 1st coat of paint (keep this coat kinda thin)

9th: Sprayed 2nd coat of paint, again keeping it kinda thin

10th: For the 3rd and final coat of paint you want to spray it on kinda thick (giving the wheel a sort of wet look) When spraying this last coat remember to keep it even.

CENTER CAPS
While I let my wheels dry (let them dry for about 24 hours) I decided it was time to start on the center caps.

Washed and degreased the center caps, then used steel wool and sand paper to ruff them up, then sprayed 2 coats of Duplicolor low gloss (black) paint. This seemed to be enough since the caps are plastic and the paint stuck very well.

After the caps dried I thought it would look good if i used a fine tipped paint brush and traced the Toyota Symbol on the center of the caps with red paint. This final touch looks pretty good, especially with the red calipers!

sweet!!! thanks man, i think imma do that on thursday...also may do the deck plate mod, but i've heard conflicting stories as to whether or not its good or bad with the supercharger....altho i almost feel like sometimes the engine wants more air? i'm sure the computer would eventually work itself out?

Love the black wheels and the red calipers, especially with the blacked out emblem on the grille.

But the red Toyota emblems on the wheels are killing it for me. IMHO, they take away from the calipers and scream "Batmobile". It was a great idea in theory, but I think all black would be so much better. Your opinion is the one that matters though.

BTW, how long did it take you to paint the wheels? Did you just mask your tires with tape?

looks good stunna. i plan on doing this to my LTD eventually. along with painting my fenders and bumpers black. but i just got mine and im taking care of maintenance items first.
 
Looks good! Search for the "Black Wheels" thread and post a couple pics in there too. A lot of others have posted their black wheels in that thread.
 
Black Rims look nice on there for sure! You just need some White lettered tires like spongerx and it will look even better!

No no no! Don't get white lettered tires, keep em black! Will look much better!
 
Looks really good. Now I HAVE to do my calipers! It just looks too good. Just finished painting mine last night. Why do these wheels look so good after some paint? I didn't realize so many people had sprayed theirs, quick cheap mod that really changes the whole rig. That's a 10 pointer in my book.

I've owned the truck for 10 years and this is pretty much my first mod besides a new radio. LOL. I really like the black myself!

I believe I have seen a few with gunmetal. Search Paint your wheels and you should find the thread. Or it may be in the first 5 pages or so...They looked really nice that color.
