i think you should post a side and rear shot of your 4runner for someone here to photoshop it for you to see what it would look like.
Personally i think it will look worse if it is flat black. The cheaper models came with flat black bumpers, door handles, and mirrors. If you are going to paint them i might consider painting them to match your paint.

I agree, which is why I did almost exactly what your are contemplating on my old 97' (I color coded it), the issue: paint adhesion.
You have to really, really, scuff up the chrome. It would be best to sand blast it if you can. If not get a wire brush attachment for a drill and go to town. You'll should use acid etching primer as well before you paint as it will help. Even with these steps you might not get lasting adhesion that will not flake off, I did get it everwhere but the corners where I didn't spend enough time scuffing "the first time".

I tried that before but it didnt seem to contribute to the thread at all. it just turned out to be a pointless post :wtf:
Back to the main topic here. I want to color match mine as well but i am worried that it wont be matched well enough to the factory white.

Have you thought about powder coating the bumper? It costs way less. To have a bumper painted it would likely run around $400, to powder coat it would run around $100. I'd suggest you not try to color match the bumper to your truck though, you won't get close enough with powder coat.
You could go with a flat black powder coat since that is what you were looking for.

and if you're going to post, at least pretend to answer the OP's question
as for painting the bumper...unless you scuff it up good...and I mean GOOD, you'll have long-term problems with the paint sticking. If you really want it done, take it somewhere...it won't be more than $200

with all the work it would take to prep and paint you could sell the chrome ones and pick up edp primed aftermarket bumpers scuff 'em and paint 'em in half the time with better results. I don't know how well airbrushing would work, does it put down a wet enough layer that will adhere to the surface?

To the OP: Find some factory painted bumpers and start there. Another poster mentioned getting new bumpers already primed and that would work too. I would strongly suggest leaving the chrome alone. To see what kind of prep work would be needed, just look at the chemical process for chrome plating. Powder coating was mentioned too, but again I would do this with metal bumpers that have not been chromed. I think you should get some quotes on salvage yard bumpers and plan on selling your chrome ones as opposed to refinishing them.
