Painting bumper pieces

So does everyone know what I am talking about when I say the piece on the front and rear bottom of the bumpers? Its normaly a different color than the rest of the runner. My truck is white and the pieces are grey. I want to paint them black but do not know if they are clear coated or just sprayed. Any ideas on painting them some what cheap without looking like junk?

i know what pieces you are talking about. i have always wondered how it would look if those middle pieces were black on my white 4runner. kind of like a reverse racing stripe
 
i really want to paint them. its not hard to take them off, just a few clips and screws. i might just go for it and say screw it.

I have a Black 2004 and was thinking of painting those pieces balck as well. Let me know how you make out...
 
I'd like to see some pictures if anyone actually did this. I've thought about doing mine since I bought it because my badges, exhaust tip, and headlights are black. My exhaust guy even randomly suggested it... I've tried 'shopping it but it's hard to tell how it will actually look because the contours don't really show up with photoshop. I was reading a thread a few nights ago about this but never found any pics of it done.

People have suggested I do it to my white 4runner and it's always been on my mind. If it turns out to not be that great, I'll just paint it factory white. I would probably just sand and spray satin black.
 
Hey JAC...

I want to paint my from and back middle bumper pieces on my 2004 limited. Would you mind giving a little step by step on how you painted yours. Did you remove them ? What exact products used?Have they chipped? Do you think you could paint the roof Rack?

Is there a place on this site where people sell stuff? I am trying to find someone who wants to trade black roof rack for a silver.

Thanks JAC, I actually saw that pic in the thread I was reading the other night. The lighting seems bad in that picture because the bumper disappears in the shadow/grille. I think in daylight it would be easier to distinguish and that the contours in the bumper would also be visible. Also in the other thread, like this one, the idea was suggested for a white 4runner which is what I have
 
I believe that is the only 4r here with the middle section of the bumper blacked out. I just posted it for the interested to have an idea.
There is Simple's white runner but he just got the grill blacked out. I think it looks awesome.

That looks good, but we're all talking about the silver piece. I'll just be the guinnea pig and paint the silver piece black later on this week for the white 4runners.
 
I went under there this morning. Looks very easy to do. 2 bolts in the middle and a plastic rivet on each side. They are clear-coated just like the rest of the painted body parts -- so just do a real fine sanding job, clean it up and spray away. The Krylon works great - did that with all my emblems I blacked out. Just add a few coats of clear too. If I have the time I am going to try and do it this weekend too.

Not as easy as you think. I took the two bolts out of the rear one and the plastic rivets out of the ends of the piece and come to find out I have to remove the side bumpers to get to two more bolts holding it on....Maybe I looked too hard into it but that's at least what I found. The front one I could only get one nut off of the bolts. The other two were just spinning the bold inside of the bumper.

I think the way I'm going to tackle this is to get a plastic paint sheet and cover the rear and front entirely and cut out the area I want to paint and then tape it up around the piece. It's too much of a hassle to take it all apart for a simple paint job.

Ouch.....that definitely seems to be a PITA. I guess I'll do the same as you and paint it while it's still on. Thanks for the info!
 
Haven't even thought about that. Not a bad idea but not as easy to touch up if it were to get dinged. But, today I'm starting on this. Doing it the easy/lazy way. I'll post results with pics on it later on.
