Painting Plastic Trim- Can You?

I love silver/black combo. I would think that the plastic being painted would chip , flake easily . I know the can prep them for painting , but it's still on top of a plastic cladding , hence a tree branch would scratch the black paint off.
I could be wrong , just my thoughts. The cladding is only held on by clips and maybe a spray on lining would add to much weight for the clips to hold. Thats heavy stuff.

I have an early "03, with the gray cladding, and I like the combo the way it is. But, I thought Toyota changed to the color matched cladding half-way through the '03 year, and all the cladding was color matched from then on.

A body shop will paint it but they'll be hard pressed to warranty it since older plastic that has been exposed to the elemnets for a few years will have a hard time keeping the paint adhered to it.
My friend who's been a body guy for over 15 years says it's hit and miss painting plastic on vechiles period. When it's painted at the factory it's under very controlled conditions and the plastic is dust free thus they can get paint to stick much better.

you can do it, there are plastic adhesion promoers and epoxy primers designed to adhere to raw plastic, but it is not money well spent. the unpainted cladding is great for offroading, and makes the older 4th gens unique. if you don't like the look, keep shopping around. for the same $ you could put in a set of ICON's front and rear.

I have read in writeups about early 2003 has unpainted claddings and bumpers for a rugged look, I am not sure if they continue that in the 2004. And of course those can fit in a 2004. Its better to verify the year and model before buying it.

My 2004 4runner Limited (Galactic Gray) with silver trim that the dealer says they do not have a paint code for. The trim is on the front and rear bumper, roof rack and side rails. I am sure someone on this forum has acquired the appropriate touch up paint and can share their experience. A picture of my 4runner is in my garage.

First time I've seen this question and I've been a member and owner since I purchased my 2003 new. Since *all* colors of the 4th gen came with the same aluminum colored trim pieces until Toyota switched to body color, I assumed the color was cast in when those bits were made.
