painting/powder coating wheels

I like my stock wheels but would love to paint or powder coat them black...I have a silver SR5 and love the look of black wheels w/ the larger tires. If anyone has done this, can you do it w/ the tire on the wheel? If so, what about the wheel weights?? What product would be the best for a sturdy finish?

In addition to what I wrote above, I'm aware that I can have a company powder coat the wheels for about 80 bucks a wheel...money isn't the issue, it's time. My 4runner is my daily driver...can't afford to have it on blocks for a week which is why I would like to somehow do this on my own.

If money isn't a problem look for a set of FJCruiser wheels and have those powder coated. Several folks have switched to FJCruiser rims or the 6lug Sequoia rims. Both of those choices offer a little wider stance but not as much as wheel spacers. The FJC rims look virtually identical to your stock T4R rims. Ebay and the 'for sale' section of FJCruiser message boards are good places to start your search for FJC rims.

Wheel weights- Stick-on weights work pretty well if the rims are clean when they are installed.

I don't know of any DIY powder coating that'll provide decent results.

If the powder coat place was close to you do one rim at a time. Your spare is a full size, nice rim...

I am two steps away from making an appt to get mine done...
I was quited $100/per wheel +-, about $80 for the pc and $1/min for sandblasting...

I doubt that it can be done with the rubbers on there, but I cant say for sure. im sure youd get a better quailty job done with them off.....
It seems like ive seen pics of people that RATTLE CANNED therer wheels, tires on, and it came out looking good. I dont think itll have the strength of PC but ull get the look..

Any of you guys out there have a picture ofyour rigs on flat black wheels? I'm thinking flat, but could go w/ a satin. I'm on the verge of simply purchasing new wheels...want to see what you guys have gone w/. The painting idea is pretty much out the window...did a lot of reading and w/ the amount of off road driving I do out here and the fact that Montana uses gravel on the roads instead of salt, doubt a rattle can finish would last long.

They will have/want to dis/re-mount the tire since you want contiguous PC over the entire surface of the wheel. Plus when they bake them, I don't think they'd want to leave the tire on.

$100/wheel is a reasonable price and pretty standard. There's a company in FL doing $65/wheel, but I have to find out if they're not including the prep (like SB'ing off the existing finish, or if they're skipping that and not doing a complete job).

If they checkout I'll probably be using them for my Vette project (and I can report back how it works out).

The DIY kits are actually pretty solid the *problem* is finding an oven that you can ruin that's also big enough the item. A buddy of mine found an old beater oven at a garage sale for like $75, pulled out all the racks, worked good for PC work. Picked up a DIY kit with lots of powder supplies, blower, etc., and did a great job on some engine parts (coil brackets I saw looked awesome).

I painted FJ wheels with good prep, 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of finish, and 2 coats of clear. Durability is so far, so good after about 6 months.

Masking off the tires was the easiest part of the whole job, so that should not be a concern.

However, if time is the issue, I completely agree with buying new rims and painting/PC'ing them, because painting your rims yourself will eat up a whole day of your time and is tedious.
