Painting stock wheels?

If you had access to the equipment, I'd say Sandblast each wheel down to bare Aluminum and powder coat them for best results. Or sand blast them down to aluminum and use a high temp heavy duty paint made for brakes and then a clear coat also made for brakes.

I put FJ wheels on my truck and painted them black myself. It only cost me about $40 and they have held up great. I just used Rustoleum Satin Black paint, I found it provided much better results than the Dupli-Color wheel paint I initially tried.

no need to sandblast them thats a lot of unneccasry work. the oem finish adheres to the aluminum the best so theres no need to strip them if ur plan is to paint them. if u where to have them powder coated they would need sandblasted. if u plan to paint them yourself then you need to make sure that you sand them really good and have them really clean before you apply paint. the previous post has good suggestions for teh paints. you can sand the wheels with a scotchbright (red) and if theres any major nicks that u want to get out you can sand them with 320 first them something finer second, such as 800.

Personally I would think that you would want a proper bonding surface to prevent peeling/flaking, but I don't exactly paint rims for a living. Just chalk it up to me being anal retentive. :nerd:
