Painting the drums

What is the best way to go about painting the rear drums? I did a search and couldn't really find anything on it. Is it the same method as repainting the wheels? They are getting rusty and really unattractive, and I figured this would be a simple and effective mod to improve the look, even if its a small improvement. I hate the look of rust anywhere on my car.

Are you just going for the new look and painting them black?

Just don't paint them red or a color that shows them off since you don't show off drum brakes. :

Get a stiff wire brush and start scrubbing. Dont stop till your arms hurt. Get them as clean as possible. Wash off all the dust and let it dry. Then use some engine enamel paint that can cope with high temps. Do 3-4 light coats, letting each coat dry for a few minutes.

haha no, I am definitely NOT painting them any other color than black, I'd like them to be as unseen as possible, hence the black, because you are right, drums are nothing to be proud about. Could I do this while keeping the drums on, or would I need to take them off of the axle?

It would be better if you took them off to do it.

I painted calipers on my Eclipse with just alot of tape and newspaper but removing them would be best and more complete.

Yeah, pulling off the drum would be much easier in order to paint it.

Besides, once you've removed the wheel, you can just pull the drum right off. All the internals stay mounted to the axle. It's just the cover you're painting that comes off.

Will the drum come right off? I've seen some other posts saying that its required a good whack of a hammer or rubber mallet to get it off if it is rusted on...any suggestions?

Toyota actually thought about what to do if the drums are hard to get off. There are two small screw holes in the drum near the studs. Screw two M8 bolts in and they will push/pull the drum off as the bolts go in.

You may need a rubber mallet or hammer, but not much force though.

I remember the first time I removed mine, I had to tap both of them a few times w/ a rubber mallet.

I've since removed them enough times that they just pop right off when I go to remove them.

Mine look pretty bad too. What I plan to do is TAKE THEM OFF FIRST , then wirebrush them, prime them with Jasco Prep and prime ( it kills rust and acts as a primer, then paint them with Black Hammered paint. I use the brush on ...not the spray. Im a welder and have found the brush on is MUCH better and stronger. They make it in many colors

just remember that brake cleaner will remove paint and some are powerfull enough to mess up powder coatings.
