Parking Brake...do you use it??

Took a class and they recommended using the parking brake. The parking pawl can fail.

Hey all,

For me, i ALWAYS use the parking brake. It is a habit now. Using it will prolong your automatic transmission life AND help out when someone rear-ends your car.

Conclusion: it is a lot cheaper to replace your parking brake than it is to replace your automatic transmission.

What do you guys think??

If my trans were to go bad with the car sitting still, I sure wouldn't have much faith in it when it was moving.

The parking pawl can fail.

Not the transmission.

I use it whenever I'm not on a flat surface but I use it less than I did on vehicles that had it located near center console. Something about the pushing pedal to the floor to engage instead of release makes me think it might get locked on.

Did not know its better for the transmission. ill be sure to do this on any un-level surface! Or maybe all the time?

I almost always use the E-brake. I still drive a manual as my DD so it’s a tough habit to “brake.”

never used the parking brake, but I also do not live in an area with many hills, everything is fairly flat. I've never had the parking pawl fail ever or know anyone that has had the pawl fail ever

Been driving for 40 years and have probably used the parking brake on any vehicle less than a dozen times, so hardly ever, lol!!!!!

Yes. It feels like it doesn’t ratchet tight enough to hold anything but it does.
