Partial stereo upgrade

For a little history I used to be into car audio pretty heavy. I loved sq and while I truly love the 4runner I would just like some of the clarity I used to have without breaking the bank. I still have my amps which I plan in using. Main 4ch is an 125.4 RMS esx zed audio and the sub amp is the 475.1 monoblock rated at 475 RMS. Both are specd at 4 ohms are are underrated. Everything is playing from a Kenwood kiv-bt901 head unit. Pretty good tuning built right in and you can turn the internal amp off.

Pretty sure I am going to work with a Dayton audio 12" in the back storage locker. Not too many sub's can play with that little airspace.

Where I draw a blank are the corner speakers. I haven't shopped door speakers in forever (2006?) So what's a good set. I am not brand picky I just want decent sound. I would prefer a 2 way component set up front but coaxial is fine for the rear doors. Any brands that are good bang for the buck these days?

I like the sound quality of the focal speakers, kinda pricey but i think they put out very clean sound. If you are on a budget take a look at kicker for bang for the buck.
 
Focal is out of this builds league this time around. I will look into the kicker. I used to enjoy the Polk db series in a very old car I had.

I should go to vest buy and give a listen. I just hate driving an hour just to get to a place that has stereo speakers and I won't buy from them.
 
Hertz makes really great speakers. Their Hi-Energy speakers are great.
Though I always feel that speaker preference is very subjective. Try to set a budget, and go to a few different locations to try to find what sounds the best for you.

I agree completely and while I have a cdt 3 way component set sitting in a box I really don't feel like this is a good vehicle to put those in. I might just sell them. I am just after a good set that won't blow my wallet out and have some decent imaging. Thanks for the suggestion of hertz. They do make a great speaker.

Just as a quick edit what is your opinions on the Rockford Fosgate punch series? Seems to be their flag line now and can do a decent setup for around 200....not too shabby but if someone has experience with this years line I would appreciate it.

You sound like you know what you're doing so here is a question. I'm just getting into audio and I was wondering if a component speaker is different from a 2-way or 3-way or if it is a component 2/3-way. I'd like to know what I should get if I want a separated tweeter for the door.
 
Read the sig, I found CDT to be a great mix of the expensive (focal & hertz). The mids from my doors alone can beat the pants off a stock subwoofer.

In the end the installation is the key factor, a great install can make cheap speakers sound good.

A 2 or 3 way speaker is much different than a component set because of the crossovers involved.

In a perfect world with perfect crossovers the ideal setup would be each hertz having its own speaker. Given that there are around 20k that the human ear can hear.....that's a lot of speakers. Now generally we group them into bass, mid bass, mid range, and tweeter.

3 way speakers are designed to handle more of the different types of individual speakers as a package deal to conserve space. As a consequence it doesn't do an awesome job at any of them. I'm not saying they suck because that's up to the individual to determine but if you hooked them up in a lab the reproduction of tones would be abysmal.

A 2 way component set is an easy way to improve the sound in the 4runner without dumping tons of money into custom door panels and other such things.

I have heard good things about the Rockford px2 line or something similar for good all around sound. Infinity kappa or reference are also well worth looking at. I had a set of cerwin vega components a decade ago and they sounded amazing. I haven't heard them recently but paired with an amp they really came alive.

Best buy is a good place to give speakers a listen....just don't buy there. They sell b class products. Shop woofers etc or amazon and get a better price.

Looks like a pretty decent set of speakers to me. I would pair those with an amplifier though. 100w rms is a good bit for component sets. You don't have to go the full 100 watts. 35 or 45w rms would be enough to make those sing.

If you're after an amplified setup I personally recommend a 5 channel amp with components up front, mid bass in the rear doors, and then a 12 in the back. That paired with a flexible head unit will bring some great sound even from our box like noisemakers. The rear doors can actually muddle the sound and pull the stage too far to the rear if you do components or even a 3 way speaker back there.

Thanks. Good to know. I recently installed a Sony head unit with an amp built in but it may not strong enough for these speakers
 
Some of the new 5 channels aren't huge as far as power but they are also small. It's not the big surfboard amps you used to store in your trunk lol.
 
Speaking of the older "surfboard" style amps. Hasanyone mounted one of thse in a rather inconspicous place in a 4r? I have a Zapco 1100M monoblock that I want to hook up tomy JL 13W7 prowedge that I already have. It was easy in my old K5 but seems like I need to be a bit more creative with this truck. Really like the setup and would like to continue using it. 2003 Limited w/JBL system. Sounds pretty good now but wold like to add the stuff I already have. Any ideas or other places I should look? Sorry for being a litle off topic but as I am new I am also trying to get my post count up so I can start new threads...

My only thoughts would be along the wall in the cargo area or rear hatch below the window. The rear hatch would add a lot of wire but would be pretty out of the way.
 
Went with small amps ...

So i don't have a build page up yet I'll try to I am running dynaudio esotar 3way 8" 3" 1" in the doors with crossovers ..in the front . In the rear I am running dynaudio comp 2 ways a 7" and 1" tweet .. For sub bass a jl 13.5 in a custom box . Jl hd 600.4 and 1200.1 ...

How do you like the 13.5? I did a set in a tundra system I built for someone else and was kind of impressed. Just figured there was too little airspace there for that sub
 
I am still breaking it in . So but so far I like it a lot . It isn't really deep bass but it really Krisp so I will give it 3 weeks to really break in .. I'm running a decent sized box tho
