Payload Spec Higher on 05

I noticed that the payload specification is higher by about 300 lbs. on the 2005 V8 4x4 over last year. I called Toyota to see if this was just another "adjustment" in their figures, or if there had been changes to the suspension.

They did indicate some minor changes, but it didn't make sense to me. Can anyone address this - or maybe it has been discussed else where?

The old payload rating was around 1200 & the 2005 is about 1500.

Also just noticed there is a little difference in published turning radius - this may also be indicitive of some changes.

Most likely it's due to the increase in hp and torque in the re-engineered V8.

I can't see where extra HP would increase the payload. The tow ratings or nothing else (except the turning radius) changed.

Payload has to do with how much weight, which is a verticle factor. HP is about moving it horizontally.

The Toyota person said there was a stabilzer bar added to the front, and something else which didn't make sense at the time. Something supposedly is different on the rear springs too - from the 2004 models.

Don't worry about it, I moved 2500lbs already with my 03

My thinking is this. In mid-year of the 03 model they increased the tow rating just by adding a class 4 weight distributing hitch to it - nothing else. This may be the case in 05, where they just decided to upgrade the specs, but nothing hardware-wise really changed.

If this is so, this just means that the earlier versions were just as capable of handling the higher payload.

Looking at the curb weight of the 2004 vs. 2005 SE V8 4x4, it has only increased about 15 pounds. So maybe some minor stuff here/there, but nothing major. That also might be all in the new engine.

The primary reason the payload number changed was to get the gross vehicle weight up above the magic number of 6000 pounds. This was important because the new pathfinder is 6000 pounds. And 6000 pounds gross weight is important because it can mean more sales to businesses.

Thanks! That makes sense now. I wonder if anyone knows about this tax break & the changes that happen in late 2004. I run a couple small businesses out of my home, and wonder if I purchase one if it can be written off & the details.
