Which Performance Tire?

Hello,

Thinking about purchasing an 09 Sport V6 4wd and throwing the URD stage 2 on it. Since it would be pushing almost 400whp, what would a good performance A/T be?

I'm stationed in Germany so the roads are almost always wet, the winters are little snow to lots of packed ice with snow on top. I also like to play in the mud and dirt when I can. Not to mention the daily sprints down the Autobahn to 120mph.

Looking at the following:

Yokohama Geolanders A/T-S in 305/45-20 (same as stock tires and rims)
Yokohama Parada Spec-X's in 305/50-20 (No mud traction at all)
BF Goodrich Rugged Terrains in 275/55-20
Firestone Destination A/T in 275/55-20

I would also be running the Enkei ST-6 in 20"

This is what I had before I moved to Germany to give you an idea of my level of accustomed performance.

I can't help much with any sugguestions as to what I would recomend, but I owned Yokohama Geolanders A/T's in the past and the compound is soft. I bought a set for my exploder and they were worn down in a year & I mean worn as in slicks. Now the exploders had front end issues also, but I swapped them with BFG AT's and never looked back. I suggest staying away from the Yoko's. They are a nice looking tire however.

My experiences with the Yoko AT-S is completely different.I have driven and wheeled the heck out of them and they still have tons of tread left. I have put ~1000 miles wheeling in Moab with little damage. I'm very happy with their performance in the snow and rain.
 
Over 500 crankhorse on the stock motor? What will you be running to hit that and will the stock motor and drivetrain handle that kinda horses?

Performance A/T is kind of an oxymoron but in this case it would mean something with an H speed rating.

Your choices will be limited by which tire you can find with that rating.
 
My suggestion would be the Rugged Terrain, apprears more street than others and designed for larger wheels. But also has some all terrain qualities.

It's the URD MK3 Stage 2. I was was running the TRD Stage 2 and my ****ty 6speed manual couldn't handle it. The X-Runner guys are swapping the 5 speed autos in so they CAN handle it. Much, much stronger. Plus theres always a valvebody upgrade from IPT.

I'm well aware of what I'm asking. A superpower tire that can do all things well enough for what I want. Thanks for your suggestion.

Sometimes it seems like half the new threads around here are just made up to drive traffic or something. A guy who's going to build a 400RWHP 4Runner but can't figure out which tires to get? Ok.

Of course I could run out and buy a performance street tire. That's easy.

I'm asking the knowledgeable individuals that drive in the mud, rain, and snow all the time what they would recommend.
 
Mud, rain, snow, packed ice and 120mph on the autobahn are all very different.

For a serious solution I'd recommend a separate set of beater wheels and tires for off-roading. It's gonna cost an extra $1k or so, but if you can spend the coin to build a 400 rwhp 4Runner, you understand the importance of using the right tool for the job.

You haven't mentioned brakes. If you're going 120mph on the autobahn, you'll want to upgrade your brakes. Are you planning to still be able to run 17-18" wheels?

Get Michelin LTX M/S2 for your everyday wet, rainy, icy, snowy driving, then get some proper wheels and tires for wheeling some 17"s with nice meaty tires.

Or just get one of the tires you mentioned above but none of them will be perfect for all of your needs.

If I'm running 20's on the street, I would probably keep the stock 17's with a real M/T. I've thought about it and it's definitely the smart thing to do. Only problem is I don't plan on lifting yet. Just trying to see if there was another option out there.

As far as brakes, I'd get an upgraded rotor and pad set. Haven't decided which yet.
 
is there an A/T on the market with a speed rating above 120? Honestly think you should look into some performance tires for everyday driving if you're always going to be running high-speed. And like mentioned, find another set of 17's to put some M/T's on whenever you need to go offroad. A tire engineered for any kind of speed like that is not going to be effective in offroad conditions like snow or any substantial amount of mud. Cool place Germany is tho, bet it'll be a blast when you've gotten it all figured out!:banana:

Had to have been the issues with the explorer I guess. I also drive fairly aggressive around turns and such, or I should say.. use to. I bought these tires new too and they didn't last.

Glad to hear someone had better results, wishing I was that person.
 
Not for nothing but 400hp in a 4500 lbs 4runner is not going to be anything special and for 120mph you certainly do not want an A/T tire. You may want to consider a different vehicle, maybe a TRD blown Tundra or a SRT Heep!

Dang thats hard to get in one tire...none of those u listed r performance to me. If u kept it on road I would say bfg, or nitto ,MT.
