periodic 4WD use

The manual for my "new" '97 says to drive at least 10 miles a month in 4WD in order to keep all the 4WD stuff ship shape. I can't help but think for some folks this has to involve driving on hard dry pavement just to get the 10 miles logged. This kinda goes against all I've ever been told about not using 4WD on firm roads. Anyone have better knowledge? Thanks

Just drive 50mph on the highway that's relativley straight and even sweeping curves won't hurt anything and really isn't too big of a deal to do. I bet more than 50% of all 4Runners even get their 4wd used period and probably still are fine but it's obvious a good idea to do.

i have a 02 sport and i do this every month.. should i put it 4wd LOCKED or UNLOCKED..does it make a difference?

4WD unlocked will do the trick. You have an 02, so you can put it in 4WD on dry pavement. The reason why they want you to put it in 4WD every month is to keep everything lubricated. People who haven't done it in a while might notice it takes a long time for the 4Runner to go into 4WD.

I also exercise the CDL occasionally. Not sure if it's necessary, but I do it anyway.
