For those who have a handgun (or two, or three) for personal/home defense, what kind of ammo do you use? I just got a Walther PPQ 9mm and am looking for a good ammo.
speer gold dot was what i used initially. However, recently, i have switched to winchester pdx1, which is used by fbi etc.. For my 9mm, i use pdx1 124 gr +p.
short barrel 12 gauge with #4 buck chambered ,followed with slug rounds made for bears in the tube. i buy the cheap stuff, don't care about brand.
some testing of rounds in drywall

imo, if you don't incapacitate the intruder with the 1st shot you have a fire fight on your hands with loved ones close by, not a good situation.
at the same time #4 making contact at HD distances is a pretty good chance at a kill and a very good chance at incapacitation, imo, and if you make contact with the 1st shot ,no way is that guy going to return fire before you can chamber another round and end if needed.
on the other hand i've been debating this in my head and wonder if i should just go for the absolute kill shot from the get go, just to protect myself from law suits brought on by burglars breaking into homes getting shot and surviving....what's you logic on this one guys? i really don't know how i should be planning this out.
like anything when a problem arises you should have an action plan, a way of moving about your house to check for intruders safely while in cover, i want your opinion on this as well, what's you plan and line of thinking for it?
i have no formal training besides COD and battlefield (apparently the terrorist train this way as well, so it's gotta be legit) haha, input is appreciated.

most types of hollow point ammo should be sufficient for your purposes. full metal jacket has a tendency to overpenetrate, and you don't want that in your home. winchester ranger 180 grain is a pretty good round. don't get too hung up on the different types. there are a million out there and it can make your brain go in circles trying to figure out how one is different from the other! i know it does for me, at least. just pick a reputable brand hollow point (hornady, winchester, speer, etc.)

If you have drawn a gun on someone, it is a life or death situation. The only time you hear of shooting to wound someone, is in some unrealistic Hollywood script. Trying to place a 'wounding only' shot in the heat of the moment, is a sure way to lose the fight.
In real life, cops for example are taught to shoot for center mass. As that is the largest target area, and the most likely shot placement that will stop the threat as quickly as possible. If they are shooting at someone, it is to kill them.
You are correct, 02SE--I wasn't clear in what I meant to say. No one is going to purposely shoot to wound in a nighttime confrontation--what I meant is that after you have fired and the perp is down, if they are still alive, most people would not purposely shoot to kill after that. It used to be, you could call the police and have the person arrested, and count on justice served ON THE PERP. I didn't mean that you should aim for an arm or leg and hope--center mass is clearly the aim point. Sorry for the confusion.
Pretty sure that was why NATO rounds were introduced, was to injure rather then kill but anyways,
