I took a solo weekend trip a few weeks back to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, as some of you may know. I've logged the trip in my photolog, some of you may enjoy seeing lots of pics.

Info:

I had the opportunity to visit the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I had been wanting to explore both parks for some time, especially now that I was older, had my 4Runner, and a good camera.

I did two days, camping overnight in the 4Runner at a campground in Grand Teton NP on my sleeping platform (WIN!). It was pretty awesome.

So I drove through Yellowstone, to the Grand Tetons, stayed the night, and then drove back out through Yellowstone. Both of these parks are right next door, not that far away from me. The park had only been open a week, and the State of Wyoming, the City of Cody, Wyoming, private donors, and the US National Park Service all cooperated and put forth efforts to open Yellowstone early despite the infamous sequestration. So LOTs of snow!

Quick facts:

• 600 miles roundtrip
• 1k photos taken
• 21.8 MPG on the way there - the way back was 23.8 MPG.
• NO muffler, haven't gotten it on yet. Loud, but self explanatory with my license plate (deaf)!
• Saw 2 grizzlies (one in each park)
• two bull elk
• two moose
• lots of bison (aka cattle to me)
• some bighorn sheep right before Yellowstone NP

Not a huge fan of this photo, per se, but it needs to be shared - 1750HP, twin turbo, geared for 433km/hr, 8 second 1/4 mile slips.

That photo was taken with the kit lens (18-105mm)

I've also got a 35mm, 40mm Macro, 50mm and a 70-300mm telephoto.

Believe it or not, that 18-105 kit lens is the most versatile lens I have. If I am going out and don't have room or don't want to carry a bag, that lens has always come through for me.

I was just trying to figure out why the images seem to be a little "grainy" to me. Don't get me wrong the actual photos are good, but it seems like the maybe your hosting service is reducing quality or something happened on the resize. More so on some pics than others, your daughter at the pier seems better than the rest for instance. Or maybe I'm crazy.

Having said that, anyone have some recommended photography books? I'd like to learn as much as I can, starting with the basics and eventually focusing on my interests of food, people, travel, events, and perhaps some landscape photography.

I think this is a great book. Outside of knowing the basics of photography, the tool that I think helps the most is having a good understanding of light and how it effects shots.

Few examples over on Dyxum Rainbows (1) - Dyxum forums - Page 1 (Sony/Minolta site for those that have never heard of it) that might be worth a look to borrow some settings.

Thanks! I know one way is by doing an HDR shot, but I was lazy and didn't want to pull it out. I guess I could always do it in post. Maybe I'll mess around with it.

On a different note, I know this isn't a photo, but figured I'd show it here anyways. Some of you know that my main work is in video. This was a vid that I just got finished with. It was for a local nonprofit here in Seattle. First vid that was shot almost entirely with my D800.

First things first ... YES I AM A CAR SHOW WHORE!

I hear admitting you have a problem is the first step ... hopefully that takes care of things for a while. lol


So we went to check out the Goodguys show today .. oddly enough not really for the cars as much as for me to try again at coming up with images I was happy with from inside the buildings. The buildings are always dark(er) and have 10x the crowd problem as the outdoor show portions. I've honestly not even attempted to get good photos at a few shows. Today I decided people and lighting be damned I'm going to drag the tri pod in and do some long exposures. This means no cranking up the ISO. No blurry hand held too long of exposures. No using the the Sony cameras ability to overlay several dark images to pull a proper exposure. (this actually works really well but is an "Auto" only option and only give a JPEG result)

The other great side effect is that the tripod gave me a bit more of a "pro look" which people seemed to respect at least slightly more than me crouched a foot from a car for 15 mins at a time waiting for the crowd to clear. Absolutely using that method again!

it will give you a good idea of what I'm planning on attending, but its not always set in stone. There is also the MR2sday gatherings every Tuesday that are good dusk/night shot practice, and I'm always looking for "guest photographers" to snap some pics for the website ... MR2sday

all that being said .. I don't know how much I could "teach". One I usually suck as a teacher, and two I'm still learning this whole photography thing myself. That of course doesn't mean we can't bounce ideas back and forth.
