Head to the mountains for a better view. If I thought I would see anything I would myself but the cloud cover appears to be pretty widespread. I was lucky to see them in northern MN years ago, very cool!

If the clouds would go away I would….I thought about going for a mini road trip to the WY state line, I just didn't want to drive four hours to see clouds.
They also said if its able to be viewed from this far down it would be like low curtains of red, not like the shots we see from Alaska.

sure glad i didnt stay up and try to see the lights....doesnt look like it made it to CO. i watched the tracker online up until 10pm and it never got higher than 2kp and needed to get to almost 9kp for CO to see it.

for those who saw my earlier post about picking a lens...well i decided. i kept the canon 16-35mm f/2.8 and was able to sell my 17-40F4L for $650. with the lens on sale, rebate, best buy rewards and selling my old one my out of pocket cost was only $800

OK, I have a question that is a bit off topic. Where is this? And were there more rocks like this (and bigger?) in the area?

Monache Meadows int he sequoia national forest, primitive camping.
Those rocks are the bottom of a hill of bigger rocks that are part of a hill, you can only climb it by foot though.
However, the area where we camped is only accessible by 4x4 trucks, since its about 10-20 miles or so into the forest.

just bought my first dslr so these may not be up to par but I am having fun with it. Still trying to figure it all out. To keep it a t4r thread, I did drive my runner to each of these locations...

Wow! Super glad this thread came up. I have been thinking about getting a nice DSLR as a birthday gift to myself. My iPhone 4 just can't take the pictures I want to take. I'm still reading around and attempting to educate myself, but any recommendations for a beginner DSLR? I thought about a Rebel XSi, but I think I might want something newer. Thanks fellas!

I'm far from being an expert but I bought my first DSLR a bit over a year ago, so I can tell you what I learned. First, it's easier on your wallet to pick a system (Nikon, Canon, Pentax, etc.) and try to stick with it since you can upgrade your camera body later and keep the same lenses. Second, a lot of people put more thought into the camera body than they do the lenses. Even the best camera body takes lousy pictures with a lousy lens. Having said that, if you can afford to, get a camera body you can grow into instead of cheaping out on a "beginner" body that you'll be replacing in six months. Third, you're better off buying a body only and a separate lens rather than a kit. Most kit lenses aren't very good quality (there are probably exceptions, but none that I know of). Others might have different suggestions or disagree with me, but that's some of the advice I wish I'd gotten before I started out.
There are lots of good sites that you can learn from and tons of YouTube videos. I found this one really useful Digital Photography School - Digital Photography Tips and Tutorials
Probably lots of other good links in this thread but it's kind of rough sorting through 60+ pages to find them. Maybe we should split into two threads - one for photography discussion and one for posting shots?

Not a doubt in my mind she has some suggestions for equipment. Thanks for your input, and any other advice or recs, please reply.
