This isn't realy a new hobby I'm picking up but for when I'm out campaign or exploring. I don't want to drop a ton of coin and I want a body with a leans.

@heaper I like your suggestion of spending money in a lense since they are great for years to come.

I don't need a camera with GPS or movie making I have a GoPro for that.

If that is your end-goal, you might look into one of the better "point-n-shoot" cameras from Canon, Olympus, Panasonic, etc. These cameras have plenty of capability, are small enough to put in your center console and can meet your needs quite well.

Here's a side-by-side of a few I'd suggest.

I'd actually suggest the opposite. If you're just getting into photography, get an old body and buy a good piece of glass to start with. Bodies go out of tech so fast that you can find good older bodies for a good price. Good glass will hold its value much more. If you stick with the hobby, you'll find that your good lenses will stick with you for as long as you stick with the manufacturer, but you'll go through bodies as they come and go.

I like this idea or something like the Canon G16 or an older G model. And if you're looking at Sony's remember the minolta AF lenes work on the Sony A mount bodies. This guy has done nice work with the Canon G9.

finally had a clear night on a weekend so i can go out and shoot some stars. sunset was 6pm the nearly full moon rise was 8pm so i didnt have much time/darkness to get really good trails but managed this shot.

Nicely done! I've got a 'to-do' for night-sky work (not star trails) at Red Rocks this Summer, during a no-moon night (June 16th or or July 16th).

Just picked up a new Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. Also got an EF 2.0X II Telephoto Extender and an EF 25 II Extension Tube.

Still learning the lens but so far it has shot some awesome pics. The lens is way more capable than I am at this point but I'm super happy with it. Here are some pics that I took with it on a recent off-roading trip.

This pic was taken with the EF 25 II Extension Tube. Not as good as a dedicated macro but makes the 70-200 a little more versatile.

I had the Canon Rebel and it was a fine camera. I would suggest you go out and try to find these in stores and really get a feel for them. Buy what feels comfortable in your hands.

If you get a D5000, you would be doing yourself injustice by not just going with a D7000, you can get one as a refurb for 500. I had the D5000 and very quickly outgrew it, it was stolen so that gave me a reason to go full frame.

Just my opinion.

Definitely do not buy the 5000.

If anything buy a used D5100. The first gen of the 5000 series had some setbacks but the 5100, 5200, 5300 were good.

I would suggest buying a used (USA) D5100 or D7000 body and separately the 18-140 Nikon VR lens.

Sorry, I don't have any firsthand knowledge with any of those cameras. I do see that B&H has the Canon T3i on sale for $399 for the body and kit lens. My friend has one and I have been pretty impressed with it.

daaaaaaamn you. you have convinced me to finally pull the trigger and pick this lens up. ordered it today.

I will be pairing with the 6D body, I looked at upgrading to the 5D mark iii since its come down in price, is it worth the upgrade? I didn't find a lot of major differences for the $2500 (there is a $300 rebate currently)

Hahaha....Congratulations! I've been really happy with it and I'm sure you will be too. If you're thinking about upgrading to the 5D Mark III from the 6D, the price difference vs the specs may not justify it. You may want to hold off for the 5DSR to be released.

So many megapixels! Personally, I went from a 24MP camera to 36MP and back to 24MP along with 16MP. This is the most well-balanced article I've seen on camera resolution:
